Description: The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service transports e-mail across the network. It is used as an e-mail submission and relay agent. It can accept and queue email for remote destinations and retry at specified intervals. Windows domain controllers use the SMTP service for intersite e-mail–based replication. The Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) for Windows Server 2003 COM component can use the SMTP service to submit and queue outbound e-mail.
Other applications — for example, Microsoft Exchange Server — might use the SMTP service as the basis for their SMTP support.
In Windows 2000, the SMTP service was installed by default. In Windows Server 2003, this service is now an optional component installed through Add/Remove Windows Components.
If this service is stopped or disabled, e-mail–based replication and forwarding do not function.
