A SharePoint 2013 site collection is a hierarchical site structure that is made up of one top-level site and sites below it. This top-level website can have multiple subsites, and each subsite can have multiple subsites, for as many levels as required. Top-level websites and subsites allow different levels of control over the features and settings for sites.
