Using groups for managing user accounts

Updated: August 21, 2008

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

A group consists of several user accounts or groups in your company network. You can use groups to manage multiple user accounts, instead of managing one user account at a time.

There are two group types that you can create:

  • Distribution group   Use to send e-mail messages. For example, if you want to send network reports to certain users, create a distribution group that consists of those user accounts.

  • Security group   Use to control access to files, folders, and application data. For example, if you have a shared printer on your network that you want only certain users to access, create a security group for the printer.
