Convert from distributed to dedicated query service

Use this procedure to help you convert from a distributed query service to a dedicated query service. For more information about the benefits of each type of query configuration, see Manage servers in the farm.

Conversion to a dedicated query service is a two-step process:

  1. Add a dedicated query server to the farm. For information, see Add a dedicated query server to the farm.

  2. Stop the search service on the front-end Web servers.

Important

You must be a member of the Farm Administrators SharePoint group to complete this procedure.

Convert from distributed to dedicated query service

Use the following procedure to stop search services on the front-end Web servers.

Stop the search service on front-end Web servers

  1. On the SharePoint Central Administration Web site, on the Operations page, in the Topology and Services section, click Servers in farm.

  2. On the Servers in Farm page, in the Server column, click the name of the front-end Web server on which you want to stop the search service.

  3. On the Services on Server page, in the services table, next to Office SharePoint Server Search, click Stop.

  4. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each front-end Web server in the farm.
