What's New in the Configuration Manager Documentation Library for August 2008

The following section describes what's new in the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Documentation Library since May 2008. The topics listed in the table are new or contain significant technical changes to Configuration Manager 2007. Topics that contain minor changes to Configuration Manager 2007 are not listed.

Planning and Deploying the Server Infrastructure for Configuration Manager 2007

 

Topic Description

Overview of Internet-Based Client Management

Updated with the features and functionality from Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and Configuration Manager 2007 R2 that are not supported when clients are managed on the Internet.

Deploying the PKI Certificates Required for Native Mode

Updated for Active Directory Certificate Services in Windows Server 2008.

Deploying the Web Server Certificates to Site System Servers

Updated for IIS 7.0 on Windows Server 2008.

Step-by-Step Example Deployment of the PKI Certificates Required for Configuration Manager Native Mode: Windows Server 2008 Certification Authority

New topic that contains example deployment procedures using a Windows Server 2008 certification authority (CA) with certificate templates.

Determine Requirements for Proxy Web Servers to Use With Internet-Based Client Management

Updated with the reference to the ISA Server document that contains the procedures required to configure SSL-to-SSL bridging for an Internet-based site system server (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=122350).

Determine the Ports Required for Internet-Based Client Management

Updated to include RPC, which is needed for site system installation and package installation.

Renewing or Changing the Site Server Signing Certificate

Updated to include the scenario of renewing the root certificate from the same certification authority. In this scenario, clients behave as if the root certification authority has changed, and by default, clients will reject the new site server signing certificate. This information has also been added to the troubleshooting issue “Native Mode Clients Become Unmanaged When They Use a New Site Server Signing Certificate” in the topic Configuration Manager Client Native Mode and Internet-Based Client Management Issues.

New Site System Server Wizard: General Page

Updated to include new information about name resolution requirements for server names entered in the wizard.

Site System Properties: General Tab

Updated to include new information about displayed site system name properties.

Setup Command Line Options

Updated to include new information about using the /MP and /SQL Setup Prerequisite Checker command-line options.

Configuration Manager 2007 Supported Configurations and Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 Supported Configurations

Updated to display non-support of IA 64-bit platforms to host the site database server role.

New topic describing issues that might be encountered when upgrading from Configuration Manager 2007 to Configuration Manager 2007 SP1.

Configuration Manager Client Native Mode and Internet-Based Client Management Issues

The entry “Internet Clients Do Not Use New Proxy Server Details” has been updated to reflect that this issue has been resolved with the Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 client.

The entry “Native Mode Operation Fails with Version 3 Certificate Templates and Windows Server 2008” has been added because the new certificate template type introduced with Active Directory Certificate Services in Windows Server 2008 creates certificates that are not compatible with Configuration Manager native mode. Updated to clarify that the external dependency for the Microsoft .NET Framework is version 2.0 or later, rather than version 2.0 only.

About Compliance Evaluation Schedules in Desired Configuration Management

Updated with the information that although the scheduled compliance evaluation is processed in the local client time by default, this can be changed to coordinated universal time (UTC) by specifying a custom schedule. This information is also added to How to Configure the Default Compliance Evaluation Schedule for Desired Configuration Management.

Determine If You Need to Export Configuration Data for Desired Configuration Management

Updated to clarify that you cannot export configuration data that is imported or inherited from a parent site. This clarification has also been added to the following topics:

Updated to include the failed import scenario of importing a deleted configuration baseline that hasn’t yet aged out and added a link to Import Failures with Desired Configuration Management.

AMT Provisioning Issues for Out of Band Management

Added the entry “Configuration Manager Fails to Provision Computers for AMT Because the Root Certification Authority Certificate has a Key Length of Greater than 2048 Bits”, which provides log file entries to help identify this non-supported scenario.

About Certificates for Out of Band Management

Updated with the limitation that out of band management cannot support certificates that are created with the new version 3 certificate template introduced with Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Certificate Services. This information is also added to Certificate Requirements for Out of Band Management.

Import Computer for Out of Band Management Wizard - Choose Mapping Page

Updated with the information that any manually specified passwords cannot be in clear text but must be encoded by using Base 64. This information is also added to Decide How to Migrate from an AMT-Based Management Solution to Out of Band Management in Configuration Manager.

About Task Sequences

Updated to state that task sequence node, task sequence subfolders, and the task sequences those nodes and subfolders contain are replicated down the site hierarchy to child sites.

Troubleshooting General Operating System Deployment Issues

Updated with information clarifying that when users are added by using the Create a New Computer Association wizard the specified users are lost. The users must be added separately after the computer association has been successfully created.

Asset Intelligence Home Page and About the Asset Intelligence Home Page

Updated with Asset Intelligence catalog synchronization status summary information to better describe expected catalog summary behavior.

Importing Software Licenses Into the Asset Intelligence Catalog

Updated with new information about how to import Microsoft and non-Microsoft software license information into the Asset Intelligence catalog.

About Standard and Branch Distribution Points

Updated with numerous clarifications about the support requirements and operational behavior of branch distribution points.

Apply Operating System and Apply Data Image Task Sequence Actions

Troubleshooting PXE Initiated Operating System Deployment Issues

Updated to include two known issues:

  • PXE Service Point Remote Installation Directories Are Not Removed During PXE Service Point Uninstall

  • Remote PXE Service Points Must Be Updated After Upgrading to Configuration Manager 2007 SP1

Security and Privacy for Configuration Manager 2007

 

Ports Used by Configuration Manager

Updated with client to domain controller port information; missing SMB ports for management point to site server; missing RPC port 135 for Configuration Manager console to the client (remote control); clarified that ports for the reporting point are configured at installation only; and added a link to a full listing of standard Windows ports. Also added the new section “Installation Requirements for Internet-based Site Systems”.
