Q. Where can I find the Systems Management Server 2003 Toolkit? (Updated December 20, 2004)

A. The Systems Management Server 2003 Toolkit 2, which replaces SMS 2003 Toolkit 1, is available on the Microsoft Download site.

Q. Can I use the SMS 2.0 Administration Feature Pack with SMS 2003? (Updated February 27, 2004)

A. The SMS 2.0 Administration Feature Pack tools will not work on SMS 2003. The Systems Management Server 2003 Administration Feature Pack is available on the Microsoft Download site.

Q. Does SMS 2003 support PDAs and Pocket PCs? (Updated December 20, 2004)

A. SMS supports mobile devices through the SMS 2003 Device Management Feature Pack, available on the SMS Web site. The SMS 2003 Device Management Feature Pack allows SMS 2003 to manage mobile devices running Windows CE (3.0 or later) and Windows Mobile software for Pocket PCs (2002 or later). The SMS 2003 Device Management Feature requires SMS 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Q. Does SMS 2003 support Wake on LAN technology?

A. Wake on LAN technology allows a computer to enter a powered-down or sleep state, but enter an active state upon receiving specific network packets. SMS 2003 does not currently include Wake on LAN technology, though there are some third-party applications that provide Wake on LAN within SMS.

Q. What version of Novell Netware does SMS 2003 support?

A. There is no support for Novell Netware in SMS 2003.

Q. Does SMS 2003 work with MOM? (Updated December 20, 2004)

A. MOM management packs are available to monitor SMS 2003 using either Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2000 SP1 or MOM 2005. Both management packs are available on the Microsoft Download site.

Q. Can we put the MOM and SMS site databases on the same SQL Server? (Added December 20, 2004)

A. It is technically possible but typically impractical for performance reasons. The best practice is to have a dedicated computer running SQL Server for SMS.
