Logging On to Windows 2000

The Windows 2000 subsystem automatically starts Winlogon.exe, which starts the Local Security Administration, Lsass.exe. The Welcome to Windows dialog box appears, containing the text Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to begin . Although Windows 2000 might still be initializing network device drivers, you can log on.

Next, the Service Controller (Screg.exe) checks the subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services for services with a Start value of 0x2, which are loaded automatically.

Services are loaded in parallel, based on their dependencies. The dependencies are described in the DependOnGroup and DependOnService entries in the subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services.

Note

Windows 2000 startup is not considered complete until a user successfully logs on to the system. After a successful logon, the Clone control set is copied to the LastKnownGood control set.
