Overview of protocols and filters

Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway includes a variety of preconfigured protocols, and you can configure custom protocols. Protocols are used when you create access rules or server publishing rules.

For ease of use, predefined protocols are divided into categories. They cannot be modified or deleted. However, some protocols are bound to a Forefront TMG application filter, and you can disable this setting. Forefront TMG provides outbound protocols for use in access rules, and inbound protocols (usually preceded with the word "Server") for publishing rules. For more information about predefined protocols, see Protocols.

You can create, modify, and delete custom protocols. When configuring a protocol definition, you can specify a protocol type, direction, port range, number, and secondary connections. For instructions, see Configuring protocols.
