Configuring content types

Microsoft Forefront Threat Management Gateway provides content types that you can use in HTTP and FTP over HTTP rules. Content types are grouped into content type sets.

Creating a content type

  1. In the Forefront TMG Management console tree, click Firewall Policy.
  2. On the Toolbar tab, click Content Types.
  3. On the toolbar beneath Users, click New.
  4. In the New Content Type Set property page, specify settings for the content type.
    Note the following:
    • We recommend that when you create content types, you specify the MIME type and file name extension.
    • When you specify the MIME type, you can use an asterisk (*) as a wildcard character. For example, to include all application types, enter application/*. The asterisk can only be used with MIME types and not with file extensions. It can only be specified once, at the end of the MIME type after the slash mark (/).

Modifying a content type

  1. In the Forefront TMG Management console tree, click Firewall Policy.
  2. On the Toolbox tab, click Content Types.
  3. Click to expand Users, and double-click the content type set.
  4. On the Content Types tab, do the following:
    • To add a content type to the set, select it in the Available Types drop-down list, and then click Add.
    • To remove a content type from the set, select it in the Selected Types list, and then click Remove.

Note that for HTTP requests, incoming content is identified by MIME type. When MIME information is missing, or when FTP is used, content is identified by file type (extension).
