What has been known as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search has been rebranded to Microsoft Search Server 2008. But Search Server 2008 isn’t just a new name for an existing product. Along with the new branding comes several new features, the most prominent of which is federated queries and tight integration with other Microsoft products to form a compelling business value proposition.

The search vertical is a busy, noisy vertical. Presently dominated by Google, Microsoft enters the market with an updated and improved product that is both compelling and well integrated with its online search, Live Search. The features in Search Server 2008 and Live Search will cause many who are entrenched with Google and other competitors to take pause and consider the direction Microsoft is taking search technologies and why they might want to use Search Server 2008 in their organization.

In this chapter, we’ll explore Search Server 2008 and its features and benefits. We’ll show you how to install and manage it. We’ll discuss the OpenSearch 1.1 standard, upon which Search Server 2008 is built. In addition, we’ll show you the solid integration Search Server 2008 has with Live Search, and we’ll uncover the business value proposition that Search Server 2008 offers. Along the way, we’ll also offer best practices for administrating and implementing Search Server 2008. We have much to discuss, so let’s get going.
