Protecting WSS Indexes

[For content updates, see Newly published content for Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager.]

System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 SP1 allows you to back up and restore indexes created by Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0.

Protecting WSS Indexes

With SP1, DPM recognizes and lists the WSS SPSearch instance at the time of creating a protection group for the SharePoint farm. The following procedure lists the steps to protect a WSS index using DPM 2007 SP1.

  1. Enable SPSearch protection on the protected computer using ConfigureSharePoint.exe.

    Syntax: ConfigureSharePoint.exe [-EnableSPSearchProtection]

    Note

The ConfigureSharePoint.exe can be found in <DPM Installation folder>\bin on your protected computer.

  2. Use the Create New Protection Group Wizard to protect the SPSearch instance which is listed under the farm in which it was created.

Be aware of the following issues about DPM support for WSS index protection:

  • During the backup process, DPM pauses index crawl and all background processes. After the backup process is completed, DPM automatically resumes these processes.

  • If the backup schedule for the Search database overlaps with the schedule for other databases on the same server but belonging to another protection group, it results in a longer pause of the crawl. We recommend that you schedule backups to minimize the pause of the crawl.

  • DPM performs incremental backups for the Search database, but on index files it performs consistency checks only.
