Optional Configuration
Applies To: Operations Manager 2007
You can configure the Windows Server DNS Management Pack for your environment. The following are optional configurations for the Windows Server DNS Management Pack.
By default, the external name resolution monitor performs an NSLOOKUP
query for a host (NS) record at www.microsoft.com to verify that external resolution is functioning properly. If desired, you can change the Host, Query Type, or disable the monitor entirely.
In the Operations console, click the Authoring button.
In the Authoring pane, expand Authoring, expand Management Pack Objects, and then click Monitors.
In the Monitors pane, use Look for: to locate External Resolution Monitor.
Right-click DNS 2003 External Resolution Monitor or DNS 2008 External Resolution Monitor.
Select Overrides, select Override the Monitor, select For all objects of type: DNS 2003 Server or For all objects of type: DNS 2008 Server.
Select Query Type and change the default setting NS, or select Host and change the default setting www.microsoft.com.
The Windows Internet Name Service time to live (WINS TTL) monitor performs an NSLOOKUP query for a test (A) record named "placeholder" to verify that WINS resolution is working properly.
You will need to create a test record called "placeholder" or create an override to change the target name.
The global zone resolution monitor performs an NSLOOKUP
query for a test (A) record named "placeholder" to verify that global zone resolution is working properly.
You will need to create a test record called "placeholder" or create an override to change the target name.
In the Operations console, click the Authoring button.
In the Authoring pane, expand Authoring, expand Management Pack Objects, and then click Monitors.
In the Monitors pane, use Look for: to locate Global Zone Resolution Monitor.

The DNS 2003 and DNS 2008 forwarder availability monitor uses www.microsoft.com as a host in an NSLOOKUP
query by default for unconditional forwarders. If your environment does not have A type records for all zones, you can override the default record type to Start of Authority (SOA) type record in Forwarder Availability Monitor with the following steps:
Go to discovered inventory and set the target to forwarders
Select a conditional forwarder instance and open health explorer
Select forwarder availability monitor and create overrides, setting debugflag = true and querytype=SOA
