Managing MDM Instances

2/9/2009

In Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) 2008 Service Pack 1, an instance specifies a separate, independent installation of MDM in a domain or forest. MDM can support multiple instances in a single domain or in multiple domains in a forest.

MDM Console allows you to connect to one or more MDM instances so that you can manage the servers and devices in these instances from a single location. You can remove the connection to an MDM instance in MDM Console if you no longer wish to manage it.

To manage an MDM instance, you must be a member of the SCMDMServerAdmin group for that instance. When a new MDM instance is created, your group membership is updated. Before you can fully manage the new instance you must log off the computer on which you run MDM Console and log on again.

Note

You can use MDM Shell cmdlets to return information about MDM instances and to specify which instance you want to manage in MDM Shell. For more information, see MDM Instance Management Cmdlets. For more information about planning and deploying multiple MDM instances, see MDM Multiple Instance Topologies.

To connect to an MDM instance

  1. Open MDM Console.

  2. In the Console tree, right-click Mobile Device Manager and then select Connect to MDM Instance.

  3. In the Select MDM Instance dialog box, select the MDM instance that you want to add to MDM Console and then choose OK.

  4. Repeat these steps for each MDM instance you want to view in MDM Console.

To remove an MDM instance

  1. Open MDM Console.

  2. In the Console tree, right-click Mobile Device Manager and then select Remove from Console.

  3. In the confirmation dialog box, choose Yes to confirm that you want to remove the instance.

    Note

When you remove the connection to an MDM instance in MDM Console, the instance continues to operate normally, but it is no longer displayed in MDM Console.

  4. Repeat these steps for each MDM instance you want to remove from MDM Console.
