Install WSUS 3.0 SP1 on MDM Servers

2/9/2009

Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) lets you deploy the latest Microsoft product updates to computers that are running a Windows-based operating system. By using WSUS, you can fully manage the distribution of updates released through Microsoft Update to computers in your company network.

System Center Mobile Device Manager lets you deploy software and updates to managed Windows Mobile devices by using a software distribution console, MDM Software Distribution Console, which is specific to MDM 2008 SP1. MDM Software Distribution Console resembles a WSUS console. After you install MDM Administrator Tools, you can use MDM Software Distribution Console to manage Windows Mobile devices for your company.

Consider the following when you install WSUS for use with MDM:

  • You can access MDM Software Distribution Console from any server or computer that has MDM Administrator Tools installed. However, you must install the 32-bit or 64-bit WSUS console before you install MDM Software Distribution Console.
  • Install a separate WSUS server for each MDM 2008 SP1 instance.
  • You must install WSUS 3.0 Service Pack 1 on MDM Device Management Server to be able to push .cab files down to managed devices. To install WSUS 3.0 SP1 on MDM Device Management Server, on the installation disc for MDM 2008 SP1, run Setup.
  • On the WSUS Server installation wizard, select the Create a Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Web site option. When you select this option, the wizard installs WSUS within its own Web site instead of installing WSUS under the default Web site. If you do not select this option, the default configuration may result in IIS 6.0 service conflicts with MDM Enrollment Server Web services. In addition, you must specify the correct ports during the installation process so that you can use MDM Software Distribution Console successfully to deploy software and updates.
  • When a prompt appears to specify an SQL database, select the Use an existing database server on this computer option, or select the Use an existing database server on a remote computer option, and then choose Next. After you make your selection, make sure that you can successfully connect to a computer that is running SQL Server.
  • When you install WSUS, you must specify English or the local language version. If you do not specify the local language version, WSUS installs without errors. However, it will not work correctly with MDM.

MDM Connect Now Tool is a client-side tool to get the latest software updates from the server. The tool provides schedule details such as previous and next runtime schedule, and provides the option to get current software updates. Log files can help in troubleshooting device-related issues.
