Install MDM Self Service Portal

2/9/2009

The MDM Self Service Portal wizard in MDM 2008 SP1 Setup installs the necessary core services and files for the portal. The MDM 2008 SP1 Setup program checks for any prerequisites that are not met.

Note

Make sure that you install MDM Enrollment Server before you install MDM Self Service Portal. If you have not installed MDM Enrollment Server first, you must enter the organizational unit (OU) information when you run Setup to install MDM Self Service Portal.

After you complete the installation steps, you can access the portal at https://servername:port, where servername and port are the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and port number that you provided when you installed the portal.

If you are upgrading MDM Self Service Portal to MDM 2008 SP1, be aware of the following issues.

  • When you run MDM 2008 SP1 Setup and install MDM Self Service Portal, be aware that custom administrator settings are not migrated to the upgraded installation of the portal.
To use the same settings in the upgraded installation of the portal, note the settings you have configured on the Portal Administration page of the current portal before you upgrade. Then set the same options on the Portal Administration page after you upgrade MDM Self Service Portal.
The procedure for upgrading is included in the following white paper: Upgrading an MDM Installation to MDM 2008 SP1.
  • If you created a custom self-service site that is based on MDM Self Service Portal, MDM 2008 SP1 includes changes that require modifications to your code. For more information, see Creating a Custom MDM Self Service Portal.

Warning

When you install MDM Self Service Portal for MDM 2008 SP1, MDM 2008 SP1 overwrites existing MDM Self Service Portal code. Make sure to back up custom self-service sites that were created based on MDM Self Service Portal before you install MDM 2008 SP1.

Procedure

To install MDM Self Service Portal

  1. On the MDM 2008 SP1 Setup menu, choose Mobile Device Management Self Service Portal.

  2. On the Self Service Portal Setup Wizard page, choose Next.

  3. Read the License Terms, select I accept the License Terms for Microsoft Software, and then choose Next.

    The Installation Directory page appears.

  4. On the Instance Selection page, select the instance to which you want to add the server. You can only add servers to MDM 2008 SP1 instances for which you are a server administrator. Choose Next.

  5. Browse for or type the name of the folder in which you want to install MDM Self Service Portal, and then choose Next. The default installation path is D:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager\SelfService.

The Self Service Portal Location page appears.

  6. On the Self Service Portal Location page, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the server that will host MDM Self Service Portal. If you deploy MDM Self Service Portal in a distributed topology with a load balancer and multiple servers for MDM Self Service Portal, type the FQDN of the load balancer. Choose Next.

    Note

If you use, or may use, multiple computers that run MDM Self Service Portal, you must enter the load balancer FQDN. This makes sure that Setup correctly configures the certificates and service connection point (SCP).

  7. On the Self Service Portal Ports page, enter the ports through which users will access MDM Self Service Portal, and then choose Next.

  8. On the Server Certification Authority page, type the name of your certification authority server in the Certification Authority box, and then choose Next. Type the certification authority in the following form: <ca_server_name>\<ca_instance_name*>*. This should be a certification authority where you have MDM certificate templates enabled.

    Note

If you prefer to install certificates manually, select the Do not request certificates during setup check box (not recommended). If you choose to create certificates manually, see the following topic in the Technical Reference: Manual Certificate Procedures.

  9. On the Microsoft Update page, choose an update option, and then choose Next. The Microsoft Update page only appears if you have not previously chosen a Microsoft Update Service option for this computer.

  10. On the Ready to Install page, verify that the information is correct, and then choose Install.

The installation status appears. When installation is complete, the wizard displays the message Microsoft MDM Server - Self Service Portal Setup installed successfully.

  11. Choose Finish to close the wizard.
