Configuring a Dial-up (CSD) Connection

The following procedures describe how to use the System Center Mobile Device Manager Group Policy extensions to configure a dial-up circuit switched data (CSD) connection to the Internet or to the company network.

Configuring a Dial-up (CSD) Internet Connection

The following procedure assumes that you are required to provide a user name and password. If you are not required to provide a user name and password, make sure that you clear the This connection requires a user name and a password check box.

To configure a dial-up Internet connection

  1. In the Group Policy Management Console, expand Group Policy Objects and then locate the target GPO.

  2. Right-click the GPO and then select Edit.

  3. In the Group Policy Object Editor, expand Computer Configuration/Windows Mobile Settings.

  4. Right-click Network Connections and then select New Network Connection.

  5. In the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizard dialog box, choose Next.

  6. In the Connection Type dialog box, choose Dial-up (CSD) and then choose Next.

  7. In the Configure a new dial-up connection dialog box, type the connection name in the Connection Name box, and then type the telephone number in the Phone number box.

  8. In the Connects To list, select Internet.

  9. Select This connection requires a username and password.

  10. If you want to prevent the user from changing these settings, select Do not allow the user to change the connection settings.

  11. Choose Next.

  12. In the Configure the Dial-up (CSD) connection dialog box, type the User name and type the Password.

  13. Choose Next.

  14. In the Completing the Network Connection Wizard dialog box, review the summary information to verify that it is correct. You can go back to change information if it is necessary.

  15. Choose Finish.

Configuring a Dial-up (CSD) Work Connection

The following procedure assumes that you connect to the network through a proxy server and that you are required to provide a user name and password.

If you are not required to connect through a proxy server, make sure that you clear the Configure how this work connection allows access to the Internet check box.

If you are not required to provide a user name and password, make sure that you clear the This connection requires a user name and a password check box.

If you are not required to connect to a proxy server, or to provide a user name and password, make sure that you clear both check boxes.

To configure a dial-up work connection

  1. In the Group Policy Management Console, expand Group Policy Objects and locate the target GPO.

  2. Right-click the GPO and then select Edit.

  3. In the Group Policy Object Editor, expand Computer Configuration/Windows Mobile Settings.

  4. Right-click Network Connections and then select New Network Connection.

  5. In the Welcome to the Network Connection Wizard dialog box, choose Next.

  6. In the Connection Type dialog box, choose Dial-up (CSD) and then choose Next.

  7. In the Configure a new dial-up connection dialog box, type the connection name in the Connection Name box, and then type the telephone number in the Phone number box.

  8. In the Connects To list, select Work.

  9. Select Configure how this work connection allows access to the Internet.

  10. Select This connection requires a username and password.

  11. If you want to prevent the user from changing these settings, select Do not allow the user to change the connection settings.

  12. Choose Next.

  13. In the Configure the Dial-up (CSD) connection dialog box, type the User name and then type the Password.

  14. Choose Next.

  15. To select a proxy server, use one of the following methods:

    In the Proxy Configuration dialog box, select a proxy server in the Existing proxies list.

    Or,

    if your proxy server is not listed, follow these steps:

    1. Choose Add.
    2. In the Configure New Proxy dialog box, type the description of the proxy connection in the Description box. Type the proxy server address and port number in the Proxy (Host:Port) box.
    3. In the Proxy Type list, select the type of proxy.
    4. In the Proxy Address Type list, select the proxy address type.
    5. If you want to prevent the user from changing these settings, select Do not allow the user to change the proxy settings.
    6. Choose OK.

  16. Choose Next.

  17. In the Completing the Network Connection Wizard dialog box, review the summary information to verify that it is correct. You can go back to change information if it is necessary.

  18. Choose Finish.
