Enable Logging on the Simulated Device

2/9/2009

The MDM Client Tools for Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager (MDM) 2008 Service Pack 1 work with the Device Emulator so that you can enable device logging to troubleshoot MDM enrollment and virtual private network (VPN) issues on the simulated device.

Note

To download the MDM Client Tools, see MDM Client Tools at this Microsoft Web page: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=127030.

You can enable logging for device enrollment and software distribution activity by using the MDM Client Tools. For more information about installing and using the MDM Client Tools, see the guides included with each tool.

To use the tools on the simulated device

  1. On the Device Emulator, choose File, and then choose Configure.

  2. In the Emulator Properties dialog box, on the General tab, choose the ellipsis button (…) for Shared Folder.

  3. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the folder where the MDM Client Tools files are saved, and then choose OK.

  4. In the Emulator Properties dialog box, choose OK.

  5. On the Device Emulator, use File Explorer to locate the MDM Client Tools files. The Shared Folder appears as a Storage Card on the emulator.

  6. Install one of the following tools from the MDM Client Tools to help troubleshoot issues:

    • MDM VPN Diagnostics Tool
    • MDM Connect Now Tool
  7. To install and use the tools, follow the instructions in the guides that are included with each tool.

Verify Tool Installation

Verify that the tools are installed on the Device Emulator

  1. From the Start menu, choose Programs.

  2. Make sure that MDM VPN Diagnostics appears in the list of programs. If it does not, then MDM VPN Diagnostics Tool did not install properly. To install the tool again, follow the installation steps in the MDM VPN Diagnostics Tool Guide to install the tool on the Device Emulator.

  3. Choose File Explorer.

  4. In File Explorer, browse to the Program Files folder, choose MDM Connect Now, and then choose the MDM Connect Now icon. This step should start a synchronization session with MDM. If it does not, then MDM Connect Now Tool did not install properly. To install the tool again, follow the installation steps in the MDM Connect Now Tool Guide to install the tool on the Device Emulator.
