Windows File Replication Service Management Pack Readme

Applies To: Operations Manager 2007

The File Replication Service (FRS) Management Pack monitors the Windows File Replication Service that is running on Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 (SP4) or Windows Server 2003.

FRS is a replication service that keeps Distributed File System (DFS) shares synchronized. FRS is also used by the operating system to replicate the contents of the SYSVOL folder in domain controllers, and it is integral to domain controller advertising.

FRS works by detecting changes to files and folders in a replica set and then replicating those changes to other replica members that are connected in a replication topology. Any member of a replica set can generate changes and FRS can resolve file and folder conflicts to ensure data consistency among the replica members.

To use the FRS Management Pack, you must install Ultrasound. Ultrasound is a monitoring and troubleshooting tool for FRS that measures the health of FRS replica sets. For more information about Ultrasound, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23439.

This readme describes how to install the FRS Management Pack in System Center Operations Manager 2007. For more information about the FRS Management Pack and how to use it with Ultrasound, see the Windows FRS Management Pack Guide for Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89240.

noteNote
You can run only one localized version of a converted management pack. To use a version of the FRS Management Pack for a different language, uninstall the FRS Management Pack, and then install the version of the FRS Management Pack for the desired language.

Before You Import the FRS Management Pack

Before you import the FRS Management Pack, you must install the updated Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Backward Compatibility Management Pack, version 6.0.5000.12. You can download it at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98874.

noteNote
If you do not install the updated Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Backward Compatibility Management Pack before you install the FRS Management Pack, the installation will fail.

Supported Applications

The FRS Management Pack monitors the File Replication Service on computers that are running Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 (SP4) or Windows Server 2003.

For the FRS Management Pack to function optimally, your computers must meet the following requirements:

  • Each computer that participates in FRS must be managed by Operations Manager 2007.

  • You must set up a server running Ultrasound and have multiple computers with working FRS replica sets. Ultrasound must be configured to manage both the computers running FRS and the FRS replica sets. You can download Ultrasound at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=23439.

ImportantImportant
The FRS Management Pack relies on information gathered by Ultrasound. If Ultrasound is managing computers running FRS but the computers are not managed by Operations Manager 2007, the state views for those computers are incomplete.

How to Import the FRS Management Pack

Download the latest FRS Management Pack files from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82105. By default, the installer places the FRS Management Pack in its own folder in the following directory: C:\Program Files\System Center Management Packs.

The contents of the FRS Management Pack are as follows:

File Name Description

Microsoft.Windows.Server.FileReplicationService.mp

Required for discovering and monitoring computers that participate in FRS.

After you download the FRS Management Pack, import it into Operations Manager 2007.

To import the FRS Management Pack

  1. In the Operations console, on the Go menu, click Administration.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand Administration.

  3. Right-click Management Packs, click Import Management Packs, click Microsoft.Windows.Server.FileReplicationService (Converted), and then click Open.

  4. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

For more information about importing management packs, see "How to Import Management Packs in Operations Manager 2007" in Operations Manager 2007 Help.

Optional Configuration

After you import the FRS Management Pack, it begins to discover and monitor computers without additional configuration. However, you can configure the FRS Management Pack for your environment and your preferences. For example, if the event-collection rules degrade server performance with slow WAN links, they can be disabled. Use the following procedure to disable a rule.

To disable a rule

  1. In the Operations console, on the Go menu, click Authoring.

  2. In the navigation pane, expand Management Pack Objects, and then click Rules.

    noteNote
To show rules for the FRS Management Pack only, on the toolbar, click Scope, and then under Target, select the check boxes for the FRS components.

  3. Under Rules, right-click the rule that you want, point to Overrides, point to Disable the Rule, and then click For all objects of type: <type of object>.

For information about the optional configurations for different monitoring scenarios, see the FRS Management Pack Guide at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89240.
