Understanding the SharePoint Portal Server Management Pack

You can use the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Management Pack to monitor components of a line-of-business application or a server farm running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 farm or line-of-business application.

Component Description

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Server Role

Represents an instance of all installations of a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 role.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Document Library Service

Represents an instance of a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 document library service.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Single Sign On Service

Represents an instance of a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 single sign on service.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Alert Notification Service

Represents an instance of a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 alert notification service.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Service

Represents an instance of a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 administration service.

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Search Service

How Health Rolls Up

Key Monitoring Scenarios

After you create a server farm (see the "Optional Configuration" section) you can monitor the health of all the servers in the farm, including the following:

  • Component configuration

  • Component functioning

  • Disk capacity

  • Database availability

  • Database free space

  • Processor performance

  • Memory utilization

  • Memory performance

  • Web site availability

Solution Description

Service Availability

  • Generates alerts when one of the following SharePoint Portal Server 2003-based services stops:

    • Administration

    • Alert notification

    • Search

    • Single sign-on

    • Gatherer

  • Provides data when core SharePoint Portal Server 2003 services start.

Server farm availability

Monitors the availability of your server farm.

Data Backup and Restore

Monitors the backup and restore status of the following:

  • Backward-compatible document library

  • Content index

  • Microsoft SQL Server

  • Search

Content Source Crawl

Monitors and generates alerts for failures of the following components of this process:

  • Crawl

  • Gatherer

Search Propagation

Monitors and generates alerts for the most critical failures of this process:

  • Propagation Failed - (events 3063 or 7012)

  • Propagation Failure - Cannot commit index (event 7060)

  • Propagation Failure - Cannot commit index to any server (event 7077)

  • Propagation Failure - disk/mem (event 7027)

  • Propagation Failure - insufficient disk space (event 7057)

Audience Compilation

Monitors and generates an alert for any failure that occurs during this process.

Profile Import Failures

Monitors the import process and generates an alert for any failure that occurs during the process

Disk Space and Security Failures

Monitors and generates alerts for the following types of failure:

  • Insufficient disk space

  • Insufficient service account credentials

  • Insufficient credentials to propagate an index

Viewing Information in the Operations Manager 2007 Operations Console

You can find views and reports containing information about your line-of-business application or server farm running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 farm or line-of-business application in the Monitoring pane of the Operations Console.

Views

You can create custom views to suit your environment. For information about creating custom views, see the "How to Create a State View" and "How to Create a Diagram View" topics in online Help.

You can see default and custom views in the Monitoring pane of the Operations Console. Expand Monitoring, expand Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, and then click a view. The view appears in the results pane. The following list contains the default views.
