Backup and Restore

Each of your home computers automatically wakes up every day during the Backup Time to be backed up if Wake This Computer for Backup is enabled and if the home computer is on or is in sleep or hibernate mode. To restore a home computer from a backup on Windows® Home Server, use the Home Computer Restore CD.

Important

You need to know the Windows Home Server password to restore a home computer using the Home Computer Restore CD.

Backup

You must ensure that Wake This Computer for Backup is checked in the tray icon menu if you want your sleeping or hibernating home computer to be automatically backed up every day. After the backup is finished, an attempt is then made to return your computer to sleep or hibernate mode. Some computers will not return to either mode which may result in overheating. If this is the case with your computer, you may not want to use this option.

If you do not want your computer to wake up automatically, click this menu item to clear it. If you want to back up a home computer immediately, right-click the Windows Home Server tray icon, and then click Backup Now.

Restore

Follow these steps to restore your home computer from a backup on Windows Home Server:

To restore your home computer

  1. Place the Home Computer Restore CD in the CD drive of the computer that you want to restore.

  2. Restart the computer and boot from the CD.
