Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides interaction between users and Web applications, and then uses the Business Data Catalog to route the results of those actions to your line-of-business applications. The Business Data Catalog collects data about the operations performed by the line-of-business applications as a result of requests originating from Office SharePoint Server 2007, and writes the data to the Business Data Catalog trace log and/or the Windows Event Log, depending on how logging is configured.

If an error occurs during a business interaction monitored by the Business Data Catalog, the details of the error are written to the logs. You can audit the logs and, when failures occur, you can use the logs to help you identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues.

Note

The Business Data Catalog records data about the business operation, but not the line-of-business data itself. The line-of-business data exists only in the line-of-business application.

When configuring the Business Data Catalog, it is important to note that it serves as a router to direct actions from the Office SharePoint Server 2007 application programming interfaces (APIs) to the line-of-business APIs and does not track details about users or the actions they perform. It does not write data back to any of the APIs, so non-repudiation (proving the data has been sent and has been received) does not apply and is not performed. Furthermore, because the Business Data Catalog functions only as a router, performance counters are not tracked and performance data is not recorded.

Also note that if you enable load-balancing in your server environment, configure your front-end Web application servers to load-balance the business data Web application URLs. Load-balancing is not performed on the Business Data Catalog itself.
