Event ID 30027 — RRAS DHCP Relay Agent Socket Operation

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

The DHCP Relay Agent is a Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) relay agent that relays Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) messages between DHCP clients and DHCP servers on different IP networks. For each IP network segment that contains DHCP clients, either a DHCP server or a computer acting as a DHCP Relay Agent is required.

Socket operation for DHCP Relay Agent (IPBOOTP) involves configuration of the DHCP Relay Agent to receive packets from the neighboring DHCP Relay Agent.

Event Details

Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 30027
Source: Microsoft-Windows-RasIpBootp
Version: 6.1
Symbolic Name: IPBOOTPLOG_CREATE_SOCKET_FAILED
Message: IPBOOTP could not create a socket for the local interfacewith IP address: %1. The data is the error code. User Action: Check for low memory; invalid arguments; unsupported socket type; unsupported address family by the considered protocol family; already in use address; socket is already connected; no route to host; or insufficient memory available. For all cases except insufficient memory, check for socket connection configuration. In the case of insufficient memory, restart the system.

Resolve

Reconfigure DHCP Relay Agent, check TCP/IP settings, check memory status, or restart Routing and Remote Access service

Possible resolutions:

  • Reconfigure IPBOOTP to create a socket for the local interface or IPBOOTP and to enable broadcasting on the socket for the local interface.
  • Remove and reinstall the DHCP Relay Agent.  For more information, see the "Remove and reinstall the DHCP Relay Agent" section.
  • Check TCP/IP settings. Use the netstat -a command to show the status of all activity on TCP and UDP ports on the local computer.
  • This computer might be low on memory. For more information, see the "Check memory usage on the server" section.
  • Stop and restart the Routing and Remote Access service. For more information, see the "Restart the remote access service" section.
  • Restart the computer.

To perform these procedures, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

Remove and reinstall the DHCP Relay Agent

To remove and reinstall the DHCP Relay Agent:

  1. Open Routing and Remote Access. Click Start, click Run, type rrasmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER.
  2. In the console tree, expand IPv4, right-click DHCP Relay Agent, and then click Delete.
  3. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
  4. Under IPv4, right-click General, and then click New Routing Protocol.
  5. Click DHCP Relay Agent, and then click OK.

Check memory usage on the server

To check memory usage on the remote access server:

  1. On the remote access server, click Start, click Run, type taskmgr, and then click OK.
  2. In the Windows Task Manager dialog box, click the Performance tab.
  3. Under Physical Memory, check the remote access server's memory usage.
  4. If necessary, free up available memory by ending nonessential applications or processes.

Restart the remote access service

To restart the remote access service:

  1. Open Routing and Remote Access. Click Start, click Run, type rrasmgmt.msc, and then press ENTER.
  2. By default, the local computer is listed as a server. To add another server, in the console tree, right-click Server Status, and then click Add Server. In the Add Server dialog box, click the appropriate option, and then click OK.
  3. In the console tree, right-click the server you want to restart, click All Tasks, and then click Restart.

Verify

To verify that the DHCP Relay Agent is working:

From the router with the DHCP Relay Agent enabled, use the ping command to ping each of the DHCP servers that are configured in the DHCP Relay Agent dialog box on the remote access server.
