A shared resource is a volume, folder, file, printer, or serial port shared over a network using the SMB protocol.

SMB (Server Message Block) is the protocol Windows uses to share files, printers, serial ports, and also to communicate between computers using named pipes and mail slots. A share must be properly referenced for it to be available.
