Moving a Computer Within the Same Domain

Updated: February 28, 2009

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

This topic explains how to use the Active Directory module for Windows PowerShell to move a computer within the same domain.

The following example demonstrates how to move the computer Fabrikam1 to the organizational unit (OU) ManagedComputers in the Fabrikam.com domain:

Get-ADComputer Fabrikam1 | Move-ADObject -TargetPath 'OU=ManagedComputers,DC=Fabrikam,DC=com'

In addition to the standard Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) attributes, you can retrieve the following extended properties of the Get-ADComputer cmdlet by using the -Properties parameter:

  • IPv4Address

  • IPv6Address

  • EmailAddress

  • ServiceAccount

For a full explanation of the parameters that you can pass to Get-ADComputer or Move-ADObject, at the Active Directory module command prompt, type Get-Help Get-ADComputer –detailed or Get-Help Move-ADObject –detailed, and then press ENTER.
