Finding Domain Controllers and Global Catalogs with DNS

Updated: February 28, 2009

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

This topic explains how to use the Active Directory module for Windows PowerShell to find the domain controllers or global catalog servers by using Domain Name System (DNS).

The following example demonstrates how to find the global catalog servers in a forest by using DNS:

Get-ADDomainController -Discover [-AvoidSelf] [-Writable] [-DomainName <String>] [-ForceDiscover] [-NextClosestSite] [-Service <ADDiscoverableService[]>] [-MinimumDirectoryServiceVersion <ADMinimumDirectoryServiceVersion>] [-SiteName <String>]

For a full explanation of the parameters that you can pass to Get-ADDomainController, at the Active Directory module command prompt, type Get-Help Get-ADDomainController –detailed, and then press ENTER.
