Things to Know About Windows 7

Updated: May 4, 2009

Applies To: Windows 7

This document addresses late-breaking issues and information about the Windows® 7 operating system that are less critical than those reported in Release Notes: Important Issues in Windows 7 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=150297). It serves as an overflow from that document if the number of issues discovered becomes excessive for one document. At this time, all known issues are reported in the release notes.

For a summary of updates, fixes, and by-design changes in Windows 7, see Miscellaneous Changes in Windows 7 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=160338).

Works great on low end notebook with 2G RAM      TennesseeDave ... Thomas Lee   |   Edit   |   Show History
Installed and configured pretty quick and easy.

Performance is better than expected on a low end Dell Inspiron with 2GB RAM.

Recognized all hardware. Not a single driver was required to be installed manually.

No Outlook Express. Have to use Windows Live Mail app. Could not find an implementation of message rules so I had scrap Windows Live Mail and revert back to using Thunderbird. Thunderbird works fine. Firefox extensions do not work. Firefox is classed non-compatible for now but simple browsing and tasks are fine, not the extensions.

I like it. Plan to upgrade all workstations on the final realease. No crashes to date.

Runs Fine, Boot's very slow.      MatyITGamer ... vojislav milenovic   |   Edit   |   Show History
The only problems are, Windows 7 takes 16 - 18 minutes to boot, and sometimes if the computer is not used for a while, the mouse is not usable (restart fixes mouse issue). Installation went well. Installation took about 2 hrs with a fresh install duel boot with Windows XP. One driver was found after update.

My PC: Asus P4P800SE Mother board, 2 Gig OCZ + 1 Gig Geil (total 3 Gig) Duel channel memory, 3.0 Ghz CPU, 2 Samsung HDD 120 GB (partitioned 80 GB / 60 GB) and 40 GB. Blueray / HD DVD Player and a DVD player. Duel boot Windows 7 & Windows XP.

Product Key Fails      Charles Milhaus ... Thomas Lee   |   Edit   |   Show History
I am doing a fresh install of RC-1 on a VirtualBoc 2.24 environment, and when I go to register product, the product key given to me and printed out at download time fails to validate. It would be lovely if I could get a product key that actually works.
Anyone have a similar ecperience? Any clues?? Any resolutions/solutions

As many persons in the english and spanish forums, I have the same problem whit the msi k9vgm-v board and the nvidia graphics cards above 7 series. I realy want to try the RC of windows 7 because the beta version was very good but the stop error 0X00000124 don't allow me to install the sofware. We hope that the problem is solved as soon as possible to install this great OS.

The RC still being shut down like the beta.      NewtoRC   |   Edit   |   Show History
I originally had the beta and did a full format of the hard drive and installed the RC version. But my comp is still being shut down every two ours or so and I get the pop up, "please activate your windows client. the beta will end in 0 hours" I used the RC activation so I have no clue why its still happening.

Windows 7 RC locking up shortly after booting to OS      Windows 7 RC locking up shortly after boot to OS   |   Edit   |   Show History

Running Windows 7 RC. Had no problem with the previous version (Win 7 Beta), how ever shortly after boot Win 7 RC freezes, no mouse or keyboard movements. Only hard reboot option available by pressing the reset button. Disabled add-ons such as Shockwave. Did not solve the problem but I noticed IE 8.0 or Chrome locks up immediately after shockwave initiates.

2 minor issues: Blue Screen on Ext. Audio Disconnect + Unexpected Folder Navigation Functionality      Sound Logic ... vojislav milenovic   |   Edit   |   Show History
1.) Restart of external firewire audio device leads to blue screen and crash
- Device is a Korg Zero 8 Live Control Console
- Crash reports have been shared
- Drivers may not be optimized for Windows 7 but do support x64 and installed without issue
- I have not physically disconnected the device when these crashes have occured, but rather turned the unit off and then on to reset the device and/or connection
...
Reason(s) for restarting the device: For the most part, this has been necessary when I have allowed the computer to go into standby mode - applications assigned to the Korg Zero 8 no longer produce audio output
note: crash does not always occur, sometimes a restart will cure the issue but may be a combination of or uncorrelated result of two different issues

2.) Unexpected functionality: If you are manually creating folder structures and delete a folder you have previously navigated to, upon using the back arrow to navigate through previous folders (provided the folder you have since deleted is one of these folders) --> I would expect the deleted folder would be skipped over and the next folder item would be accessed ...again this is not necessarily an issue, and may be beneficial to some, but I thought I would point it out

...I will soon be doing some heavy GPU testing via fortran, C/C++/CUDA and python --> expect to have much more feedback then :)
