Communications Server 2007 R2

Topic Last Modified: 2011-09-20

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports both computer-based and device-based clients. The features available to individual users depend on which server roles are deployed, how the administrator configures user accounts, and which client and/or operating system is running on the user's computer.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 with Service Pack 1 (SP1 and later) with Unified Messaging is required for integration of Office Communications Server 2007 R2 with the voice and e-mail features of Exchange Server.

Communications Server 2007 R2 supports the following computer-based clients:

Microsoft Office Communicator

Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 is the recommended unified communications client for Communications Server 2007 R2. This client supports placing and receiving calls, enhanced presence, instant messaging (IM), and multimodal conferencing features.

Users who are using Office Communicator 2007 R2 cannot be homed on an Office Communications Server 2007 or a Live Communications Server 2005 with SP1 Enterprise pool or Standard Edition server.

For both internal and remote clients, the certification authority (CA) certificate chain for the Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment must be accessible for validation by Authority Information Access (AIA), Certificate Revocation List (CRL), and Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) validation. Additionally, the root or intermediate CA certificate must be trusted and available, meaning that it must be either pre-installed on the client computer or accessible over AIA by the client computer. For details about certificate status checking, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=228576.
