Your Office Communications Server deployment requires initial configuration and user provisioning, as well as ongoing administration of components and usage to meet the growth and changing needs of your organization. Office Communications Server administrative tools include graphical MMC snap-ins and other tools that facilitate tracking and management of users and components, including the following:

  • Office Communications Server 2007 R2 administrative tools. During deployment of Office Communications Server 2007 R2, you complete much of the configuration of the components by using the deployment tool, but additional configuration requires management tools that need to be readily available to the administrators in your organization who are responsible for managing the components and ongoing provisioning of all users. Administrative tools are not installed by default, but you can use the Deployment Wizard to install all the administrative tools, except the Group Chat tools (which you install using the Group Chat Setup Wizard). This includes installation on Office Communications Server 2007 R2 servers and Communicator Web Access servers as well as on one or more management computers, such as a management console from which you want to centrally manage your Office Communications Server 2007 R2 deployment.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports centralized administration, including the following:

    • Centralized user provisioning. To provision and administer Office Communications Server users, you use the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in and the administrative tools provided with Office Communications Server, as well as on Communications Web Access servers. To initially enable users, you use Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). Ongoing provisioning and administration is supported in both Active Directory Domain Services and the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 administrative tools.

    • Centralized administration of servers and other components. You can use the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 administrative tools to centrally manage servers. You can also use them to query the Back-End and Archiving databases of Office Communications Server.

Office Communications Server also supports command-line management.

  • Group Chat tools. Group Chat includes both the Communications Server 2007 R2 Group Chat Administration Tool and a Server Configuration Tool. When you install Office Communications Server Group Chat server using the Group Chat Setup Wizard, both tools are installed by default on the computer. You can use the Group Chat Administration Tool to create categories and chat rooms, define their scope and membership, create federated users and groups, manage how users can use the chat rooms, and specify which users are administrators and managers. You can use the Server Configuration Tool to start, stop, and configure servers, manage compliance, and set logging levels.
