Software and Hardware Requirements

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 and Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 will reach end of support on January 9, 2018. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 requires 64-bit server software and hardware. In addition, requirements for CPU cores and RAM are different from the minimum requirements for Office Communications Server 2007. For details, see Hardware Requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 in the Supported Topologies and Infrastructure Requirements documentation.

The following are the operating system and server software requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2:

  • Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise

  • Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition or Enterprise x64 Edition with Service Pack 2

  • Windows Server 2003 Standard or Enterprise x64 Edition with Service Pack 2

  • Back-end database support is provided by either Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 with SP2.

  • To provide voice mail storage functionality with Enterprise Voice, Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 requires Microsoft Exchange 2007 SP1 Unified Messaging. For details about the Exchange 2007 requirements for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, see Integration with Exchange Server Unified Messaging in the Planning and Architecture documentation.

Server Role Collocation

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 supports placing more than one server role on each server. Understanding which components can be collocated will help you plan your hardware needs. For details, see Supported Server Role Collocation in the Supported Topologies and Infrastructure Requirements documentation.

Load Balancers

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and Office Communications Server 2007 cannot coexist in a single pool or Edge Server array. You can, however, connect an Office Communications Server 2007 pool and an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 pool to the same load balancer. For example, if you have an array of Office Communications Server 2007 Directors attached to a load balancer, you can also simultaneously attach an Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Director array to the same load balancer.

The use of a software load balancer, such as Windows Server Network Load Balancing, is not supported.
