Managing Conference Directories

Topic Last Modified: 2009-03-05

Office Communications Server 2007 R2 uses Conference Directory objects to assign a unique public switched telephone network (PSTN) conference ID to each dial-in conference Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and locate a Web conference by using its PSTN conference ID. In Office Communications Server 2007 R2, a Conference Directory is created as a service on each Front End Server in each pool when the pool is created. You can reassign a Conference Directory to a pool when you move it from another pool (for example, when a pool must be deactivated or removed). A Conference Directory can become unassigned if the pool to which it was assigned is forcefully deactivated while the Conference Directory is still assigned to the pool. When a pool is in scheduled maintenance, a Conference Directory is unreachable, but not unassigned.

By creating a Conference Directory on each pool, Office Communications Server distributes the authority to assign PSTN conference IDs to all pools in a deployment. Each Conference Directory has a unique numeric ID, which is encoded as part of the PSTN conference ID that the user enters from the phone. The directory uses the remaining portion of the PSTN meeting ID to identify the specific conference of interest, which the directory maps to a conference URI. As such, PSTN conference IDs are encoded to indicate the pool on which the dial-in conference was scheduled. When a conference is scheduled and assigned a corresponding PSTN conference ID, the pool that generates the conference is also assigned to host the conference. The Front End Server can locate a conference URI by using the conference ID. The mapping for a particular dial-in conference ID to a conference URI is owned by the pool on which the conference was originally scheduled. Typically, this is the conference organizer’s home pool. However, if the organizer is moved to another pool after scheduling a conference, the conference will move with the organizer, but the conference ID mapping continues to be assigned to the original pool. The organizer’s current home pool also retains a copy of the conference ID to increase availability in case the organizer is moved across a wide area network (WAN) boundary.

Moving a Conference Directory

To move a Conference Directory

  1. Open Office Communications Server 2007 R2.

  2. In the console tree, expand the forest node, and then do one of the following:

    • To move a Conference Directory that is currently assigned to an Enterprise pool, expand Enterprise pools, expand the pool, and then expand Assigned Conference Directories.
    • To move a Conference Directory that is currently assigned to Standard Edition server, expand Standard Edition Servers, expand the pool, and then expand Assigned Conference Directories.
    • To move a Conference Directory that is currently unassigned, expand Unassigned Conference Directories.
  3. In the details pane, right-click the Conference Directory that you want to move, and then click Move conference directories.

  4. On the Welcome to the Move Conference Directory Wizard page, click Next.

  5. In the list, click the name of the pool to which you want to move the selected Conference Directory.

  6. Optionally, to force the move even if the pool to which the Conference Directory is currently assigned is unavailable, select the Force the move even if the hosting pool is unavailable check box, and then click Next.

    Note

If you force the move, you must manually move existing Conference Directory data to the new pool using the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 version of the DBImpExp.exe tool. For details about the DBImpExp.exe tool for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, see the DBImpExp-Readme.htm file in the <drive>:Program Files\Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2\Server\Support folder of a server on which Office Communications Server 2007 R2 is installed.

  7. Verify that the settings that you specified are correct, and then click Next.

  8. Click Finish to close the wizard.
