Connection Manager Components and System Requirements

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 Foundation, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Vista

This section covers the system requirements for the Connection Manager client and its components that are installed when you run a profile created by using the CMAK wizard.

Connection Manager requires at least 2 megabytes (MB) of free disk space and one of the following:

  • Windows 2000

  • Windows XP

  • Windows Server 2003

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows 7

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Exact disk-space requirements for each system vary, based on the elements that you include in the service profile. For information on determining the size of the complete deliverable, see Planning for Effective Implementation.

If your Connection Manager profile includes phone book downloads, your clients must have a version of Internet Explorer installed on their computers. Users do not have to have Internet Explorer set as their default browser or use the software.

For dial-up connections, Connection Manager requires a 28.8 modem or faster connection. Connection Manager can automatically configure the modem. If you include the Connection Manager software in the service profile, the user's modem is configured as needed to support Connection Manager.

Important

You must use a version of Windows with the same 32-bit or 64-bit processor architecture as the client on which you want to install the profile. A profile created on a 32-bit version of Windows can be installed only on a computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows, and a profile created on a 64-bit version of Windows can be installed only on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows. Because Windows Server 2008 R2 is available only as a 64-bit operating system, to create a profile that will run on 32-bit clients you can install CMAK as an optional feature on a computer running the 32-bit version of Windows 7. For more information, see Installing and Starting the Connection Manager Administration Kit Wizard

Note

We recommend that you install the latest service pack for all client operating systems before installing a Connection Manager service profile.
