About protocol handlers (Search Server 2008)

The crawler uses protocol handlers to access content. When creating a content source, search service administrators specify the protocol handler that the crawler will use when crawling the URLs specified in that content source. Search Server 2008 provides protocol handlers for all common Internet protocols. The following table shows the protocol handlers that are installed by default.

If you want to crawl content that does not have a protocol handler installed, you must install a third-party or custom protocol handler before you can crawl that content. Several third-party protocol handlers, with accompanying installation instructions, are available for Search Server. Check with the third-party manufacturer for instructions when you install third-party protocol handlers.

Crawling content from enterprise content management systems

Search Server has connectors that enable it to connect to and index content from other enterprise content management systems. Since the content is indexed into a Search Server content index, users can search and get results from these content sources by using the SharePoint search user interface.

Enterprise Search Indexing Connector 2008 for EMC Documentum

The Microsoft Enterprise Search Indexing Connector 2008 for EMC Documentum includes a protocol handler that enables Search Server to index content from EMC Documentum content sources. This connector also allows metadata to be indexed for advanced searches. Users can perform searches and review search results from the SharePoint search user interface.

Enterprise Search Indexing Connector 2008 for IBM FileNet

The Enterprise Search Indexing Connector 2008 for IBM FileNet enables Microsoft enterprise search systems to index the contents of an IBM FileNet repository. Once indexed, this connector also allows IBM FileNet search results to be displayed for users from within the Microsoft enterprise search system. These capabilities are based on the connector’s ability to natively access the appropriate file formats, data structures, and security implementation of the IBM FileNet document management system. This protocol handler also integrates metadata for advanced searches.
