Installing FTP 7.5 on Windows Server 2008

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

There are two FTP servers that can be used with IIS 7. FTP 7.0 is included with Windows Vista® and Windows Server® 2008. FTP 7.5 is included with Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows® 7, and is also provided as a downloadable installer file from the Web.

The FTP server that comes with Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 is essentially the same FTP service from IIS 6.0. When you select the FTP service to install in IIS 7.0, you are actually setting up the previous IIS 6.0 Manager and the compatibility tools necessary to run it on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

The new FTP 7.5 server that is downloadable from the Web can be used on Windows Server 2008. To install the new FTP server, follow the instructions on this page. For more information on the features included in the new version, see the What’s New for Microsoft and FTP? topic.

Installation Notes

Before you install FTP 7.5 on IIS 7, ensure that the following criteria are met:

Requirements

  • You must be using Windows Server 2008.

  • You must uninstall FTP 6.0 that is included with Windows Server 2008 before you install FTP 7.5.

  • IIS 7 must be installed, and IIS Manager should be installed if you are going to manage the FTP server by using the IIS Manager user interface.

  • You must be an administrator to install the FTP server. (See the Downloading and Installing section for more information.)

  • IIS 7 supports a shared configuration environment, which must be disabled on each server in a Web farm before you install FTP server on each node.

noteNote
You can re-enable shared configuration after the FTP server is installed.

Downloading and Installing

There are two downloadable packages for the FTP server. Download the one that corresponds to your version of Windows Server 2008 from one of the following links:

FTP for IIS 7.0 (x86)

FTP for IIS 7.0 (x64)

To run the FTP installation package
  1. Log on to your server by using the account named "Administrator," or log on to your server by using an account that has administrative user rights.

  2. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Accessories.

  3. Right-click the Command Prompt menu item and select Run as administrator.

  4. In the Command Prompt window, type the command from the following list that corresponds to the version of Windows on which you want to install FTP 7.5:

    msiexec /I ftp7_x86_rtw.msi

    msiexec /I ftp7_x64_rtw.msi

FTP on 2008 R2 SP1
This information appears to be out of date. We are attempting to use FTP on Server 2008 R2 SP1 x64 edition, however when running the installer (ftp7_x64_75.msi) we recieve and error message stating "This version of the operating system is not supported. FTP services for IIS 7.0 can only be installed on windows server 2008.) I noticed there is a naming difference in the installer package we received from the link on this page, so apparently it's been updated as well since this page was created (ftp7_x64_rtw.msi vs ftp7_x64_75.msi). It looks like we need a new installer package that understands up-to-date OS version. If someone from MS sees this and can peruse a fix, please email any details to kisys@kisys.com.<br />
