Lets say you have x86 Vista Home Prem. can you upgrade to x64 Win7 Ultimate. Clearly a freash install would be in order, but do the upgrades support this move?

XP Professional Volume Licensing      Proxyx ... Thomas Lee   |   Edit   |   Show History
One of my larger customers uses XP Professional volume licensing which essentially uses a single XP license across multiple machines. How will they be able to upgrade the machines using this single serial number to Windows 7? It is my understanding that the Windows 7 upgrade license ties itself to the XP serial and deactivates the serial. Perhaps I misinterpreted this.

x86 to x64-not - response      AngelsSword   |   Edit   |   Show History

Cross architecture upgrades have never been supported (server based or client based windows OS), as stated above; "Cross-architecture in-place upgrades (for example, x86 to x64) are not supported."

As long as MS are continuing like vista was, you should be able to borrow a friends x86 version and use your x64 key (when I changed from a 32bit to 64bit OS on one of my machines I installed using the original 32bit software key that was liscensed to the PC), so won't be a waste, can anyone confirm this will work?

if you have an x64 CPU would recommend backing up your files and upgrading anyway, x64 OS typically run apps faster than an x86 OS.

Upgrade from XP x64 to Vista x64 to 7 x64? - response      AngelsSword   |   Edit   |   Show History
That should work, but means you need a Vista key too?

Personally i think if you haven't re-installed your OS for more than 12 months it's worth a clean install. Though your PC should run fine from an upgrade there will likely be some files left over eating space up, not a big issue if you have a larger drive for your OS, but if you are running <40gb for your OS Drive, space is valuable. If you use your PC at home and installing/removing programs regularly whether trial or full apps/games a re-install rather than upgrade can make everything run better and avoid any conflicts with leftover files. Just remember to back the files you want to keep from your OS Drive/Partition first, the windows upgrade/migration tool can do your default location files (ie My Documents etc).

Does previous OS need to be installed when using an upgrade disc?      DigitalMan2112 ... Thomas Lee   |   Edit   |   Show History
I still have not seen a definitive answer to this question. I own a copy of Vista Ultimate. I'm currently running Win 7 Ultimate RC. I ordered the Win 7 Home Premium upgrade from Amazon. Will I be able to install Win 7 on a blank drive (just supplying the vista key or media)? I do not want to do an in place upgrade. I still have time to cancel my order with Amazon if this won't work.

Ebenezer Scrooge is back .....      GrimLoki1273 ... Peter Gee   |   Edit   |   Show History

Please you guys and gals - STOP whining around!! FINALLY MS brings out a good OS !!! Puts words upfront like "Simplicity", "safe by default", make it finally 'candy to my eyes' and throws FINALLY everything "old" off and starts fresh. Everything done as requested all these years - and you still keep whining!!

Btw. Apples OS ..Cheetah, Puma, Tiger and I belive the new one is called Snowtiger or so??? Isn't that perfect as well. You don t believe me?

h**p://www*youtube*com/watch?v=RrlW_fgWMR8

But true, the upgrade path support scope could have been a little wider, then again; I´d rather have a REAL clean and slick OS without problems then some upgraded OS - IT has always been a "little" Problem in the past to upgrade - won't you agree?

So, it is finally working the way I always wanted it to work and I won t anyone taint the W7 experience!!!

I wonder if the next version is gonna be called W8 ? ;)

Hi Ebenezer, this is coming to you from a Mac Book Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate RC. Both Snow Leopard and Win & are running side by side on the MAC, using Vmware. Files can be swapped between the OSs as well. So don't knock the Mac Tigger.

whats all the fuss about?      smh82 ... Thomas Lee   |   Edit   |   Show History
Come on folks. i agree with ebenezer (Grimloki1273): Finally a decent offering with all the stuff people the world over have wanted for so long and your still not happy.

For years i have wanted my PC to do many of the things windows 7 now makes possible. The experience of the Beta and now RC7 has seen his product mature into a very slick, savvy offering that should satisfy even the most hardcore user. (im a graphics driven gamer and windows 7 truly delivers the goodies for me)

I Say so what if there is a quirky upgrade path. In the past i would have moaned out loud too because the offerings always fell short of expectations in some way and the myriad of upgrade options was at times very confusing. At least this new version is clean cut from the word go. New installation is best! Upgrade is not the best option in my opinion.

The Windows 7 experience has been improved several hundred fold on previous versions, so surely there is sufficient value in that alone to justify the additional spend.

In my view, windows 7 is an OS that does what i want, How i want, when i want, and it does it very well.

Ill will be spending the bucks for it. I see the value from testing the product and if you cannot, then you must be one of these people that moan about every little thing all the time.
Just in case your wondering, I have purchased every version of windows since windows 1.1. and i can honestly say i finally have a strong faith in MS Windows. I could not say this about previous releases at the same stage of their life cycle.

Upgrade from Vista Ultimate      lgvl   |   Edit   |   Show History
I currently have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on my laptop which i bought after receiving the laptop last year. I paid close to 300 dollars for this upgrade on the promise that Microsoft would offer greater tools and services to Ultimate owners, this promise never came to fruition in my eyes and in the eyes of almost all other Ultimate owners. Now i have Windows 7 RC on my HTPC at home and love it and would like to install it on my laptop. My question is how can Microsoft make me whole again as a customer after taking my money with their last Ultimate edition which proved to be a waste of money? Or in other words, what is Microsoft doing for its loyal Ultimate customers who feel they were cheated?

Second: What am I missing out on by downgrading from a 64 bit OS to a 32 bit OS (even though I'm upgrading from Vista to 7)? My system has a quad core processor with 8gb RAM. From what I understand, any more than 4gb RAM becomes worthless when running a 32 bit OS.

Your robotic refferals to various forums is extremely confusing to me and the many others who want an answer to this question.

The packaging on the windows professional upgrade only says and I quote "*This version of Windows 7 is designed as an upgrade for Windows Vista." It does not specify a particular version of Vista.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/upgrading-from-windows-xp-to-windows-7

To upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Windows 7, you'll need to select the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. A custom installation doesn't preserve your programs, files, or settings. It's sometimes called a "clean" installation for that reason.
A custom installation is more complex, and it can sometimes take a couple of hours to complete. We created this five-step tutorial to help guide you through the entire process each step of the way.

What you need

An external hard disk. You'll need to move your files off of your PC before you install Windows 7. To make this easier, we recommend a free download called Windows Easy Transfer, which will require an external hard disk. They’re readily available at electronics and office supply stores, and they provide an easy way to add additional storage space to your computer.

The original installation discs or setup files for the programs that you want to use with Windows 7. You’ll need to reinstall your programs by hand after installing Windows 7. When you run Windows Easy Transfer you will get a report that lists the programs that you are currently using with Windows XP.

32-bit or 64-bit: Which version of Windows 7 to install?

Both 32-bit and 64-bit installation discs are included in the Windows 7 package. 64-bit operating systems can handle large amounts of memory—typically 4 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM) or more—more efficiently than 32-bit operating systems. However, not all computers are 64-bit capable. For more information, see 32-bit and 64-bit Windows: frequently asked questions.
You'll probably need the 32-bit version, but to make sure right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

If you don’t see "x64 Edition" listed, then you’re running the 32-bit version of Windows XP. Step 1 of this tutorial will show you how to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which can let you know if your comptuer is capable of running the 64-bit version of Windows 7.

If "x64 Edition" is listed under System, you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows XP and can run the 64-bit version of Windows 7.
Next: Download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

Using Win 7 Pro Key - 'Windows 7 Home Premium' to 'Windows 7 Professional' w/o clean install?      Wiggles87   |   Edit   |   Show History
I have 'Windows 7 Home Premium' and have bought the student version of 'Windows 7 Pro' as it is cheaper for me then buying the 'Anytime Upgrade'.
I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade (using the 'Windows 7 Pro disc/key') without doing a clean install?

Office Home and Student 2007 Reinstall after upgrading to Win 7      busystudent   |   Edit   |   Show History
I just upgraded to 7 this weekend, and need to reinstall a few programs. Is there anyway that I can reinstall my Office Home and Student 2007, without using another one of the three uses we get with the product?

Can I upgrade from "Windows 7 x64 Ultimate N" to "Windows 7 x64 Ultimate"?      Chandra.Sekhar   |   Edit   |   Show History
I've installed the missing component in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate N - which is the "Media Feature Pack" and theoretically, I'm running "Windows 7 x64 Ultimate" but, is there a easy way of tweaking the registry to make the OS believe its running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and not the N version?

The reason is I'm unable to install SharePoint 2010 just because of this simple "N" situation. Can someone please help?
