You enable user profile properties for use in search scope crawls by setting them to Indexed. After the crawl is complete, users can use people search to perform queries against these properties, which improves the relevance of their search results.

By default, when user profiles are imported from the Active Directory directory service, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) servers, and line-of-business (LOB) applications registered in the Business Data Catalog, the user profile properties that are imported from those servers and services are ready to be used in search scopes to conduct searches.

You can customize user profiles for use in search scopes by creating additional property types, and by then manually populating them with data. When you do this, you use this procedure to ensure that the property type is set to Indexed so that the property type is included in the crawl. You can also use this procedure to remove a user profile property from being included in a crawl.

Before you perform this procedure, confirm that:

Important

Membership in the Viewers SharePoint group on the Shared Services Administration site is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Membership in the Farm Administrators SharePoint group is insufficient to perform this procedure.

To configure the search scope properties

Use this procedure to configure the user profile properties to be included in the crawl for the search scope, or to remove them from the crawl.

Index the scope properties

  1. On the Shared Services Administration Home page for the Shared Services Provider, in the User Profiles and My Sites section, click User profiles and properties.

  2. On the User Profiles and Properties page, in the User Profile Properties section, click View profile properties.

  3. On the View Profile Properties page, in the Property name column, point to the property that you want to edit, click the down arrow that appears, and then click Edit.

  4. Configure the user profile property for inclusion in or removal from inclusion in the crawl for the search scope:

    • To include the user profile property in the crawl, on the Edit User Profile Property page, scroll down to the Search Settings section, select the Indexed check box, and then click OK.

    • To remove the user profile property from inclusion in the crawl, on the Edit User Profile Property page, scroll down to the Search Settings section, clear the Indexed check box, and then click OK.

Repeat the previous steps for each property as needed to ensure that the properties to be included in the search scope are set to Indexed.
