Microsoft Online Services FAQ

The following questions may be asked about the Microsoft Online Services.

Where can I learn more about purchasing Microsoft Online Services?

You can get the information about purchasing Microsoft Online Services at Microsoft Online Services Web site.

What are the system requirements for Microsoft Online Services?

To access Microsoft Online Services, the client computers must be installed with supported system and application software. In addition, your company’s connection to the Internet must be configured correctly and have enough capacity to handle the network traffic.

For more information about system requirements for Microsoft Online Services, see Client Computer Requirements and Company Network Requirements.

How can I use my domain to access SharePoint Online and Outlook Web Access?

Microsoft Online Services does not host your domain or provides World Wide Web services. URL branding will not be possible without the combination of these services. Therefore, URL branding is not supported by Microsoft Online Services. If you have access to World Wide Web service, here are some scenarios that you can possibly use.

Some domain registrars allow you to add URL Frames or URL Redirects as a DNS Record option.

By default, your Outlook Web Access (OWA) and SharePoint Online sites will use the following URL naming convention:

  • OWA: https://yourdomain1microsoftonlinecom.mail.microsoftonline.com

  • SharePoint: https://yourdomain1microsoftonlinecom-1.sharepoint.microsoftonline.com

You can also verify your domain with Microsoft Online Services and set it as the default domain. This will provide some branding. For example, if you verify contoso.com and set it as the default domain, your OWA and SharePoint Online URLs will be as follows:

  • OWA: https://contosocom.mail.microsoftonline.com

  • SharePoint: https://contosocom-1.sharepoint.microsoftonline.com

Why do new user accounts get invalid user name and password errors when accessing any of the Microsoft Online Services?

New user accounts are given temporary passwords. Users must change their passwords before they can access any of the Microsoft Online Services.

To change the password, use the Microsoft Online Services Sign In application or the My Company Portal - Change your password Web site.

Why am I constantly prompted for a user name and password when using Microsoft Online Services?

The Microsoft Online Services Sign In application is required for single sign-on and will prevent you from getting prompted. In addition, certain features will not work without the Sign In application.

Why does my user name and password no longer work?

It is possible that your password may have expired. Passwords expire in 90 days.

Use the Sign In application to enter your user name and password, and you will be prompted to change your password.

You can also go to the My Company Portal - Change your password Web site to change your password.

How can I unlock my account?

Accounts get locked out after about 10 failed attempts. You must wait 15 minutes before trying to sign in again. You will also keep receiving the message indicating that your account is locked out until you successfully sign in. If you continue to have problems after waiting 15 minutes, please contact Microsoft Online Services Technical Support.

How can I contact Support for Microsoft Online Services?

Both official and non-official forums should not be used for authoritative answers. Answers provided on these forums may not be supported by Microsoft Online Services Support. To receive an authoritative answer from Microsoft Online Services Support staff, please open a service request by using one of the following methods:

  • Call a customer support representative at (1) (866) MSONLINE or (1) (866) 676-6546, Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 18:00 Pacific Time (UTC-8).

  • Submit a service request from Microsoft Online Customer Portal for general questions regarding sales, Microsoft Online Customer Portal usability, and trial subscriptions.

  • Submit a service request from your Microsoft Online Services Administration Center if you already have an administrator account with one of the Microsoft Online Services.

How can I access my Exchange Online e-mail?

To access your Microsoft Exchange Online e-mail, you must install supported e-mail client software on your personal computer or supported mobile device.

For more information about supported e-mail client software and mobile device software, see Client Computer Requirements.

What mobile devices can I use with Exchange Online?

In general, mobile devices running Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync 12 can work with Microsoft Online Services.

For more information about supported mobile device software, see Client Computer Requirements.

Dd867715.note(en-us,TechNet.10).gifNote
Mobile devices are supported for e-mail and messaging only. Administration and other functions require a personal computer and appropriate software.

Can I connect to Exchange Online by using POP3 or IMAP protocol?

Exchange Online supports Outlook Web Access, Outlook Anywhere (RPC/HTTP), POP3, and ActiveSync. To enable POP3 for a user mailbox, open a service request in the Administration Center.

IMAP is not supported.

How can I use Exchange Online on my web form to send messages?

This is not a supported scenario in Microsoft Online Services.

However, in theory, you must install the Sign In application on a computer, and then sign in and configure the Sign In application with an Exchange Online MAPI profile. You should have the web form use this MAPI profile programmatically.

How can I automatically forward e-mail messages from my Exchange Online account to an external address?

To automatically forward Exchange Online e-mail messages to an external address, you will need to know your source e-mail address, your target e-mail address, and you will need to create a service request. First, create a contact for the e-mail address you want to forward to (this will be the “target e-mail address”). Next, open a service request to configure the settings in Microsoft Online Services. In the service request, include information about the source e-mail address in Exchange Online that you want to forward from, the target e-mail address, and whether or not you want to leave a copy of the message in the source mailbox.

Can I migrate from my on-premise SharePoint sites to SharePoint Online?

SharePoint migration, including SharePoint Designer’s backup and restore functionality, is not supported by Microsoft Online Services Technical Support.

There are third-party tools available to perform SharePoint site migration. You could also use a combination of creating Site, Library, and List templates for your on-premise SharePoint site, and then restore those templates to your SharePoint Online site.

Can SharePoint Online sites be available to external users?

Currently, SharePoint Online requires a user name and password to access the site. Anonymous login is not allowed. This feature is being considered for future releases of SharePoint Online.

Can I use a workflow other than the Three-state workflow?

Currently, Three-state workflow is the only workflow enabled for and supported by SharePoint Online. All other workflows are disabled by SharePoint Online and cannot be enabled. Enabling other workflows is being considered for future releases of SharePoint Online.

Where are the other “Fantastic 40” SharePoint templates?

SharePoint Online only has a few of the “Fantastic 40” templates enabled. Enabling other templates is being considered for future releases of SharePoint Online.

Can I access my old Outlook profile when using the Sign In application to configure Microsoft Office Outlook?

When the Sign In application configures Microsoft Office Outlook, it also configures Outlook to prompt for a profile. You will be prompted for a profile if you launch Outlook from a source outside the Sign In application, such as from the Start menu. If you launch Outlook from the Sign In application, it will not prompt you for a profile and open the profile configured for Exchange Online.

Why am I getting “Single Sign On failed since domain credentials are disabled in your machine” error when signing in to the Sign In application?

The save password feature on your computer may be disabled. For information about how to enable this feature, see Save Password Feature Is Disabled.

This error might also occur if you are not using a supported operating system. For more information about supported operating systems, see Client Computer Requirements.
