Updated: June 17, 2009

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

  1. Click Start, type Device Manager in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.

  2. In the console tree, double-click Smart card readers. The smart card reader device should be listed. An example is shown below.

If the smart card reader device is listed in Other devices as shown below, or has a title of Unknown Device, you must manually install the smart card reader device driver.

Smart card reader listed in Other Devices

  1. Click Start, type Device Manager in the Search programs and files box, and then press ENTER.

  2. Double-click Other devices, right-click the smart card reader device, and then click Update Driver Software.

  3. In the Update Driver Software window, click Browse my computer for driver software, and then follow the prompts to locate and install the driver.

  4. When the driver finishes installing, the smart card reader device is listed in Device Manager in the Smart card readers node.

If the smart card reader device is listed correctly in Device Manager but the smart card does not work as expected when you insert the smart card into the smart card reader, refer to the smart card troubleshooting diagram in Troubleshooting Smart Card Plug and Play Issues for the next troubleshooting step.
