Existing customers, please see the Service Release Document for additional information.

SharePoint Online is a managed collaboration solution from Microsoft Office 365 for enterprises that provides an organization's employees with a way to efficiently work together, quickly locate organizational resources, search for experts and corporate information, manage content and workflow, and gain business insight to make well-informed decisions.

Built on the capabilities of SharePoint 2013 technology and hosted in reliable, security-enhanced Microsoft data centers, SharePoint Online is a standardized service that provides an end-to-end solution, offering functionality that customers can use immediately.

This service description describes the services and features that are included with SharePoint Online Dedicated plans, including the SharePoint Online Dedicated plans that comply with International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). It is intended for decision-makers and IT professionals for both new Office 365 customers whose SharePoint environment will be SharePoint 2013.

This Service Description is provided to help potential customers decide whether SharePoint 2013 Dedicated or ITAR plans are right for them. It is not intended to help support upgrade decisions for current SharePoint 2013 Dedicated or ITAR customers. If you are already a SharePoint 2013 Dedicated or ITAR customer and would like to know about the most recent release so you can plan for upgrading, please see the Service Details documents on the customer extranet. (Your SDM can provide a link or copy of the relevant documents.)

For more information regarding features available in each service offering, see SharePoint Online Dedicated Plans.

For more information about features descriptions please see the following feature sections:

There are some limitations to the SharePoint Online service, such as site collection quotas, file upload limits, and storage limits. For details, see SharePoint Online Dedicated: software boundaries and limits.

SharePoint Online is hosted in Microsoft-managed, enterprise-level data centers that are designed to deliver highly available, highly resilient Online Services. Because of this, the SharePoint Online service is available at 99.9 percent uptime, and is financially backed by a service-level agreement (SLA). For more information about SLAs, see the Office 365 Dedicated Plan Service Descriptions and Service Level Agreements.

Service availability can be affected by hardware failures, natural disasters, and human error. To address these risks, Microsoft has implemented a service continuity management plan: a process for managing risks to help ensure that the IT infrastructure of a customer is capable of providing continuing services if normal availability solutions fail. The service continuity management plan for SharePoint Online includes provisions to quickly recover from such unexpected events.

Recovery Objectives

Two metrics are commonly used in service continuity management to evaluate disaster recovery solutions:

  1. Recovery point objective (RPO): The acceptable amount of data loss at the conclusion of the data recovery process.

  2. Recovery time objective (RTO): The acceptable amount of time the service can be down before being brought back online.

The RPO and RTO defined for SharePoint Onlinee in the event of a disaster are:

  1. 45 minute RPO: In the event of a failover to a secondary datacenter, SharePoint Online will restore a copy of the customer's data that is less than or equal to 45 minutes old at the time of service disruption.

  2. Two-hour RTO: The customer will be able to resume service within two hours after service disruption if a disaster incapacitates the primary data center. When the secondary environment is brought online, the profile store will be fully restored, but it may take some time for audiences (such as groups, distribution lists, and security groups) to be restored and new profiles to be synchronized.
