SQL Server 2014 Resources

SQL Server 2014

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 builds on the mission-critical capabilities delivered in our prior release by providing breakthrough performance, availability and manageability for your mission critical applications. SQL Server 2014 delivers new in-memory capabilities built into the core database for online transaction processing (OLTP) and data warehousing, which complement our existing in-memory data warehousing and BI capabilities for the most comprehensive in-memory database solution on the market.

SQL Server 2014 also provides new disaster recovery, backup, and hybrid architecture solutions with Windows Azure, enabling customers to use their existing skills with on-premise features that leverage Microsoft’s global datacenters. In addition, SQL Server 2014 takes advantage of new Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 capabilities to give you unparalleled scalability for your database application in a physical or virtual environment.

More Information and Support

New In-Memory OLTP capabilities built into the SQL Server 2014 database engine can result in significantly improved database application performance. In-Memory OLTP enables performance benefits without having to refresh your hardware. Use of main memory can result in significant performance gains – up to 30x faster, with an average 10x improvement; application performance depends on many factors.

New In-Memory OLTP

Developed in partnership with Microsoft Research, the In-Memory OLTP feature in SQL Server 2014:

  • Allows you to create memory-optimized database objects that enable more efficient data access.

  • Allows native compilation of Transact-SQL stored procedures, which will run business logic more efficiently.

  • Gives full ACID guarantees – all data in durable tables will be recovered after a server crash.

  • Does not use page-based data structures, eliminating latch waits.

  • Results in higher throughput, lower latency, and better performance, all at lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

  • Does not rely on the buffer pool.

  • Indexes exist only in memory.

  • Unlike competitors, SQL Server's memory optimization is not a separate product – it integrates with existing tools. A database can have both disk-based and memory-optimized tables.

To get started with In-Memory OLTP, see In-Memory OLTP (In-Memory Optimization).

SQL Server 2014 provides an important component of the Microsoft hybrid IT value proposition: Connect today’s on-premise IT environment to the cloud. Hybrid solutions can be tailored to meet your needs: Run code both on-premise and in the cloud, run in the cloud using on-premise data, or run entirely in the cloud leveraging more than one datacenter. These scenarios enable you to move to the cloud at your own pace while preserving the value of legacy IT investments. SQL Server 2014 enables you to consume cloud services on your terms.

Leverage hybrid architectures to create efficiencies

Flexibility to run SQL Server workloads on-premise or in the cloud

Consistency between local and cloud environments

SQL Server provides the foundation for the Microsoft BI platform through a comprehensive collection of services and content types that bring you faster insights across a wide range of analytical and data visualization applications, including Excel, Power View, Data Explorer, and business reports. Analysis Services, Data Mining, Reporting Services, Power View, and Power Pivot provide end-to-end services that power BI solutions across the enterprise.

With each release and on every platform, you see deeper integration between Windows Azure, Office 365, SQL Server, SharePoint, and Office. SQL Server 2014 is no exception. In this release, familiar applications and data visualizations are available on more devices and formats.
