System Requirements for Service Provider Foundation for System Center 2012 R2

The following tables describe the prerequisites required to install Service Provider Foundation for System Center 2012 R2.

Note that several requirements can be met by running the Add Roles and Features Wizard in Server Manager. Click Manage, and then click Add Roles and Features. Be sure to expand the role or feature to ensure that all the associated requirements for it are selected.

Required hardware and settings

Hardware Minimum required and recommended values, per web service


2 gigabytes (GB) minimum, 4 GB preferred.

Available hard disk space

1 GB minimum, 3 GB preferred.

Required operating system and software

Software Action required

Operating system - Windows Server® 2012 R2

Also supported are Windows Server® 2012 R2 Datacenter and Windows Server® 2012 R2 Foundation

Install on the server.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) server certificate for the Service Provider Foundation website

Obtain or create an SSL server certificate, or generate a self-signed certificate as an installation option. That option and applicable certificates appear in the Service Provider Foundation setup wizard on the Specify a location for the SPF files page. You can obtain a certificate in the following ways:

  • Purchase and import a certificate from a certification authority.

  • Import an Active Directory Certificate.

Microsoft ASP.NET Model View Controller (MVC) 4

Install from the Microsoft Download Center.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise

Install if needed.

Although it is not required to install Service Provider Foundation, SQL Server is required on at least one server to contain the Service Provider Foundation database.

The Setup program detects the existing installations of SQL Server and configures the use of any existing Service Provider Foundation database.

System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager Console

Although you do not need to install the full System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager, you will need to make references to a server that has Virtual Machine Manager running and that can be accessed by supplied credentials.

This is required so that Setup can install the VMM web service.

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Data Services 5.0 for Open Data Protocol (OData) V3

If not already installed Install from the Microsoft Download Center.

Management OData Internet Information Services (IIS) Extension

Add this feature in Server Manager.

Web Server (IIS) server role. Select the following role services to install with Web Server (IIS):

  • Basic Authentication

  • Windows Authentication

  • Application Deployment ASP.NET 4.5

  • Application Development ISAPI Extensions

  • Application Deployment ISAPI Filters

  • IIS Management Scripts and Tools Role Service

Add this role and services in Server Manager.

.NET Framework 4.5 features, WCF Services, HTTP Activation.

Add these features in Server Manager.

System Center 2012 R2 Operations Manager

Required if usage metering is implemented.
