Specifying Data Viewers
After you configure a Browse Session to point to the files that contain the data you want to display, or when you are ready to run a Trace Session, you can specify a data viewer such as the default Analysis Grid, and Message Analyzer immediately begins to retrieve and display data. To specify a data viewer for your Browse Session or Trace Session, you can use the drop-down menus that are accessible from the View With and Start With buttons, respectively, to display a menu that enables you to select the data viewer of choice. In addition, following the retrieval of data that displays in your initially selected viewer, you can display data in any of the other available data viewers by specifying them in a right-click menu that is accessible from the Session Explorer tool window, or you can specify viewers from the New Viewer drop-down menu on the Message Analyzer Home tab. The data viewers that are available in Message Analyzer are described in Data Viewers.
Note If you specify additional data viewers in a particular Browse Session or Trace Session, Message Analyzer will automatically repopulate those viewers with data whenever you modify the session Configuration and rerun it.
Data Viewer Selection Locations
You can specify data viewers, including the Analysis Grid, the Protocol Dashboard and SMB Reads and Writes charts, and the Sequence Match viewer, from the following locations:
Browse Session — provides data viewer selections from the drop-down menu of the View With button in the Browse Session configuration.
Trace Session — provides data viewer selections from the drop-down menu of the Start With button in the Trace Session configuration.
Session Explorer tool window — provides data viewer selection commands from a context menu that is accessible by right-clicking a session node or viewer node in the Session Explorer tool window.
New Viewer — a drop-down menu in the Session group on the Ribbon of the Message Analyzer Home tab that provides the same data viewer selections that are accessible from the Session Explorer tool window. The different data viewers that you specify from this drop-down menu also work with Trace Session or Browse Session results, as previously indicated.
Specifying a different data viewer typically adds a separate viewer tab that contains an alternate data presentation format for the specific session that you chose, while retaining all other data viewers already in place for the chosen session. The different data viewers that you can specify will work with Trace Session or Browse Session results only and do not modify the original content of a trace or imported message collection.
Note Because the Details, Field Data, Message Data, Call Stack, and Diagnostics tool windows — accessible from the Tool Windows drop-down menu in the Windows group on the Message Analyzer Ribbon — are either message-specific windows (respond to message selection) or session-specific (snap to data viewer selection) windows, they depend upon and interact with the data viewers. As a result, you cannot specify one of these windows to start a Trace Session or Browse Session.
Tip When you have session data for which you have specified multiple data viewers, for example, the Protocol Dashboard and the Analysis Grid viewers, you can bring the message data contained in a viewer into focus by clicking its associated node in the Session Explorer tool window, or by selecting its associated tab.
