This guide provides instructions for setting up Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) on a computer running Windows Server® 2012 R2 operating system. It explains how to install and configure the software that is required for setting up a first federation server (running AD FS software) in a federation server farm or how to join a federation server to an existing farm.
This guide does not provide instructions for setting up and configuring the following:

An Active Directory domain
Note For AD FS to function, each computer that functions as a federation server must be joined to an Active Directory domain. -
Setting up AD FS in a production environment
To set up a federation server in Windows Server 2012 R2, perform the following steps:

Step 1: Join a Computer to a Domain

Step 2: Enroll an SSL Certificate for AD FS

Step 3: Install the AD FS Role Service

Step 4: Configure a Federation Server

Step 5: Configure a federation server with Device Registration Service

Step 6: Add a Host (A) and Alias (CNAME) Resource Record to Corporate DNS for the Federation Service and DRS

Step 7: Verify That a Federation Server Is Operational

Step 8: Deploy the Web Application Proxy
