Before Your Transition

Exchange 2013

Applies to: Exchange Online Protection

Topic Last Modified: 2013-10-07

The following sections will help prepare you for a smooth transition from Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (FOPE) to Exchange Online Protection (EOP), and the video will walk you through each of the steps.

Your browser does not support video. Install Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash Player, or Internet Explorer 9.

Exchange Online Protection (EOP) is a new and more advanced cloud-based email filtering service that replaces FOPE. Like FOPE, it helps protect your organization against spam and malware, and includes features to safeguard your organization from messaging-policy violations.

EOP includes several new features that were not available in FOPE, including a new administration center, the ability to use Exchange transport rules to enforce email policies, and enhanced handling of bulk email messages. For a description of the new capabilities you’ll be able to enjoy after your transition, see What's New in Exchange Online Protection.

To see a side-by-side view of the capabilities of FOPE and EOP, see FOPE vs. EOP Feature Comparison.

For general information about EOP, refer to the Exchange Online Protection TechNet library content. The Exchange Online Protection Overview and EOP General FAQ topics are good starting points.

You will be informed about your transition date and other important transition-related information via email. To ensure that we are communicating to the correct administrators, you should review and update your Company’s contact information in the FOPE Admin Center. In addition, you should update your Company’s address so that we may correctly provision your new service in the appropriate geographic region.

All notification emails related to the transition will be sent to all FOPE Administrators by default. If you would like us to send the notification emails to other people within your organization, all you need to do is create a Contact for them on your Company page, and designate them as a FOPE Transition Contact. We will then send all notifications to the FOPE Administrators and FOPE Transition Contacts.

To add a FOPE Transition Contact, perform the following steps:

  1. Sign in to the FOPE Admin Center.
  2. Navigate to the Administration tab.
  3. Navigate to the Company sub-tab.
  4. Click Add in the Contacts pane to create a new contact identifying your FOPE Transition Contact, or click Edit to update an existing contact.
    1. Under Contact Type, select Other.
    2. Under Title, enter FOPE Transition Contact.
    3. Complete the following fields:
      • E-mail
      • First Name, Last Name
      • Address Line 1, City, State/Province, ZIP/Postal Code
      • Country/Region, Phone Number
  5. Click Save.

In order to provision your new EOP tenant into the appropriate geographic datacenter we must know the location of your primary office. You can ensure that this information is correct by reviewing your company‘s contact information within the FOPE Admin Center. If you do not have a company contact, you should create one.

To add or update your Company Contact information, perform the following steps:

  1. Sign in to the FOPE Admin Center.
  2. Navigate to the Administration tab.
  3. Navigate to the Company sub-tab.
  4. Perform one of the following steps:
    • If a company contact is not present, click Add in the Contacts pane.
    • If a company contact is present and needs to be updated, click Edit in the Contacts pane.
  5. Add or update the following fields:
    • E-mail
    • First Name, Last Name
    • Address Line 1, City, State/Province, ZIP/Postal Code
    • Country/Region, Phone Number
  6. Click Save.

If you’re an existing Office 365 customer, with SharePoint Online, Lync Online, or other Office 365 related services, except for Exchange Online, let us know so that we can set up your EOP service within that same account. EOP uses the same administration and billing platform as other Office 365 services, which means you will be able to manage EOP alongside other Office 365 services after your transition is complete.

To inform us that you have existing Office 365 services, please contact the transition team by emailing Move2EOP@microsoft.com. Provide us with your FOPE domain name and your Office 365 domain name.

Approximately four weeks before your transition from FOPE to EOP, you’ll receive an email that your transition date is approaching.

14 days prior to your transition date, you’ll receive a second email notification. This second message will provide you with the specific date on which your FOPE service will transition to EOP. If for any reason you are not satisfied with this date, you may choose a one-time option to postpone the transition for 30 days. You can request to postpone only after you have received your second transition email. To postpone your transition to EOP, you will need to sign in to the FOPE Admin Center. You will notice a message at the top of the portal indicating that your transition has been scheduled. To postpone, click Click here for more options and follow the instructions.

If you don’t see a confirmation message in the FOPE Admin Center within 1 hour after requesting a postponement, please contact the transition team by emailing Move2EOP@microsoft.com.
