UE-V 2.0 Agent Upgrade Checklist

Updated: December 2, 2013

Applies To: User Experience Virtualization 2.0

The UE-V Agent is the core of a UE-V deployment. The UE-V 2 Agent introduces a number of new features and modifies how and when the agent uploads content to the server. The upgrade process automates these changes. To upgrade the UE-V Agent run the agent installation program, AgentSetup.exe, AgentSetupx86.msi, or AgentSetupx64.msi, on users’ computers.

noteNote
When you upgrade the UE-V Agent, you must use the same installation program file types, .exe file or Windows Installer .msi package, which installed the previous UE-V Agent. For example, use the UE-V 2.0 AgentSetup.exe to upgrade UE-V 1.0 Agents that were installed by using AgentSetup.exe.

The following configurations are preserved when the Agent Setup program runs:

  • Settings storage path

  • Registry settings

  • Scheduled tasks – Interval settings are reset to their defaults

System Center 2012 Configuration Manager or another enterprise software distribution tool can be used to automate and distribute the UE-V Agent upgrade.

We recommend the upgrade of all of the UE-V 1.0 Agents in an environment, but the upgrade is not required. UE-V 2 settings location templates can interact with a UE-V 1.0 agent because they only share the settings from the settings storage path. However, we recommend moving the deployments to a single agent version to simplify management and support of UE-V.

If you use custom templates, do not edit these templates with the UE-V 2.0 Generator until all UE-V 1.0 Agents are upgraded to UE-V 2.0. A template that is edited with the UE-V 2.0 Generator is updated to the newer schema and no longer works on UE-V 1.0 Agents.

If you use a settings template catalog, upload the UE-V 2.0 templates to the catalog. The default Windows desktop settings location templates have been updated in UE-V 2.0. Because each updated template has a new name, UE-V 2.0 Windows desktop templates can reside beside the UE-V 1.0 version. They have a higher template version number and, due to schema changes, are only used by UE-V 2.0 Agents.

Custom templates continue to function for both the UE-V 1.0 agent and UE-V 2.0 Agents.

Implement management tools. The UE-V 1.0 settings are still available but new settings are unavailable until the new management tool is downloaded and implemented. Management tools include:

  • Group Policy ADMX Templates

  • System Center 2012 Configuration Pack for User Experience Virtualization (UE-V).
