A shadow copy is a snapshot of a volume that duplicates all of the data that is held on that volume at one well-defined instant in time.

Resolve

Use the event text to determine the cause of the error condition and take appropriate action

Note: This event can be caused by running backup software containing a 32-bit Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) requester on a 64-bit version of Windows.

This event usually indicates a problem with a VSS provider. To troubleshoot this error condition, you first need to determine what caused it by examining the event text. After determining the cause of the error condition, follow the steps indicated for each possible cause. If the problem is still not resolved, contact the provider vendor if it is not Microsoft. If the provider is a Microsoft provider, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support. For more information, see https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=102491. You should provide the entire event log message as it appears in the Event Viewer.

To perform these procedures, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

Use the event text to determine the cause of the error condition

To use the event text to determine the cause of the error condition:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type eventvwr.msc, and then click OK. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, ensure that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
  2. In Event Viewer, expand Windows Logs, and then click Application.
  3. To filter the events so that only events with a Source of VSS are shown, in the Actions pane, click Filter Current Log. On the Filter tab, in the Event sources drop-down list, select the checkbox for VSS. Select other options as appropriate, and then click OK.
  4. To sort the displayed events by date and time, in the center pane, click the Date and Time heading.
  5. Look for Event ID 22, and use the event text to identify the name of the application or service that caused the error condition.
  6. If the event was caused by the COM+ Event System, see the "Check that the COM+ Event System service is started" section.
  7. If the event was not caused by the COM+ Event System, see the "Use System Restore to create a manual restore point" section if your computer is running Windows 7, or the "Use DiskShadow to create a shadow copy of the system volume" section if it is running Windows Server 2008 R2.

Check that the COM+ Event System service is started

To check that the COM+ Event System service is started:

  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the results pane, double-click COM+ Event System.
  3. In Service status, make sure that the status is Started. If the status is not Started, click Start.
  4. Ensure that Startup type is set to Automatic.
  5. Click OK.

Use System Restore to create a manual restore point

To use System Restore to create a manual restore point:

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System, and then click System Protection.
  3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
  4. On the System protection tab, click Create.
  5. Click Finish.

Use DiskShadow to create a shadow copy of the system volume

To use DiskShadow to create a shadow copy of the system volume:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
  2. Type diskshadow, and then press Enter.
  3. Type add volume <Volume>, where Volume is the drive letter for the system volume, and then press Enter.
  4. Type create, and then press Enter.

Verify

To verify that the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) can create a volume shadow copy, perform the following procedure, and then retry the previous VSS operation.

To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To verify that the VSS service can correctly create a volume shadow copy of the system volume:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt window. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
  2. Type diskshadow, and then press Enter.
  3. Type add volume <Volume>, where Volume is the drive letter for the system volume, and then press Enter.
  4. Type create, and then press Enter.
