Note

Unless otherwise noted, the information in this article applies to both Microsoft Search Server 2008 and Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.

Search Server 2008 includes a number of Web Parts that allow users to perform actions such as performing queries and viewing search results. Each Web Part has properties that are unique to that Web Part as well as properties that are common to many Web Parts, which include properties that affect the appearance of the Web Part. .

Use this procedure to configure properties that affect the appearance of a Web Part.

Important

Membership in the Designers SharePoint group is the minimum that is required to complete this procedure.

Configure properties that are common across Web Parts

  1. On the Search Center site that you want to configure, click Site Actions, and then click Edit Page. On the Edit menu for the Web Part whose appearance you want to change, click Modify Shared Web Part.

    Note

    To change a Web Part that is on the Search Results page, run a search query. When the Search Results page appears, click Site Actions, and then click Edit Page. On the Edit menu for the Web Part whose appearance you want to change, click Modify Shared Web Part.

  2. Expand the Appearance node:

    • In the Title box, type the text you want to display in the Web Part title bar.

    • In the Height box, type a number of pixels, and then click Yes to set a fixed height for the Web Part frame on the page. If No is selected, the height of the Web Part adjusts automatically within the zone.

    • In the Width box, type a number of pixels, and then click Yes to set a fixed width for the Web Part frame on the page. If No is selected, the width of the Web Part adjusts automatically within the zone.

    • In the Chrome State box, select Minimized to display the Web Part with only the title bar visible. Select Normal to display the Web Part body and title bar.

    • In the Chrome Type box, select the kind of border that you want to display around the Web Part. This also determines how the title bar of the Web Part is displayed.

  3. Expand the Layout node:

    • Select the Hidden check box if you want to hide the Web Part on the page. Clear the check box to display the Web Part.

    • In the Direction box, select Left to Right to display the components in this Web Part from left to right. Select Right to Left to display the components in the Web Part from right to left..

    • In the Zone list, select a zone in which you want the Web Part to display.

    • In the Zone Index box, type the number that determines the order of the Web Part in a zone. Web Parts that are assigned lower numbers are displayed above Web Parts that are assigned higher numbers.

  4. Expand the Advanced node:

    • Select the Allow Minimize check box to allow users to minimize this Web Part.

    • Select the Allow Close check box to allow users to close this Web Part. A closed Web Part is not deleted from a page.

    • Select the Allow Hide check box to allow the value in the Hidden property to be modified. The Hidden property is in the Layout node.

    • Select the Allow Zone Change check box to allow the value in the Zone property to be modified. The Zone property is in the Layout node.

    • Select the Allow Connections check box to allow this Web Part to share data with other Web Parts. Connect data in Web Parts.

    • Select the Allow Editing in Personal View check box to allow users to personalize this Web Part.

      Note

      Some Web Parts do not allow a personal view.

    • In the Export Mode box, select Export All Data to put no restrictions on the data that is exported from the Web Part. Select Non-Sensitive Data Only to restrict the data that is exported from the Web Part.

    • In the Title URL box, type the URL of the page that is opened when a user clicks the title of the Web Part.

    • In the Description box, type the text that displays when the user’s mouse hovers over the title bar of this Web Part.

    • In the Help URL box, type the URL of the page that users are directed to when the user clicks the Help icon.

    • In the Help Mode box, select how the Help window displays when the Help icon is clicked.

    • In the Catalog Icon Image URL box, type the path of the image file that displays for this Web Part when the user is browsing a list of available Web Parts that can be added to a page.

    • In the Import Error Message box, type the text that explains that the attempted import of this Web Part failed.

    • In the Target Audiences box, select one or more groups of users who can import this Web Part.

  5. After you have made the changes that you want, click OK to close the tool pane.
