Exchange Server Supportability Matrix

Topic Last Modified: 2009-08-20

The Exchange Server Supportability Matrix provides a central source for Exchange Administrators to easily locate information about the level of support that is available for any configuration or required component for all versions of Exchange Server.

Ee338574.note(en-us,EXCHG.80).gifNote:
The tables in this topic use an "X" to identify supported configurations or required components for each version of Exchange Server. If an "X" is accompanied by an asterisk, see the section below the table for corresponding information.
Ee338574.note(en-us,EXCHG.80).gifNote:
Information about the level of support that is available for Exchange Server 2010 will be added in a later version of this topic.
Life Cycle Support

For more information about the support life cycle for a version of Exchange Server, Windows Server, or a Windows Client, see the Support Life Cycle page. For more information about the Microsoft Support Life Cycle, see the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy FAQ.

Any product that is not listed in the tables below is not supported. This is because it has not been tested, it is not compatible with Exchange Server, or it has reached the end of its lifecycle.

Release Model

The following table identifies the release model that is used for updates and hotfixes for each version of Exchange Server. With Exchange 2007, each update rollup package is cumulative with regard to the whole product. Therefore, if you apply an update rollup package to Exchange 2007, you apply all the fixes that are contained in that update rollup package. This includes all the fixes that are contained in each earlier update rollup package. When we create an update or a hotfix for earlier versions of Exchange, one or more of the binary files that are included in the update or that are included in the hotfix are cumulative. That is, they are cumulative with regard to the contents of the files. They are not cumulative with regard to the whole Exchange product. The release model that is used by a product is identified by an "X."

Documentation or Supported Functional level Error

In the "Active Directory Environment " table and the "Exchange 2007 RTM " column, notice these two rows:
Windows Server 2008 Domain Functional Level
X
X
Missing

Windows Server 2008 Forest Functional Level
X
X
X, One of these two boxes is wrong.

Because a Forest Functaional Level mandates that all domains are at that minimal same level, a Domain Functional level is set and assumed. I expect that you are simply missing the DFL X.

Clarification needed for Win2008 DS and E2k3

Under Operating System Environment:
For "Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Servers" and "Windows Server 2008 SP2 Active Directory Servers", I suggest that the X for Exchange 2003 SP2 to have a * by it. In the comment I would like it to say "only in Windows 2003 native mode domains (see next table)." This is confusing some people, as they are not looking at the next table and correlating the two.

In the "Active Directory Environment" table, the title should be changed to "Domain/Forest Function Level". "Active Directory Environment" is a little ambigious and has some room for misunderstanding.
