The SharePoint Diagnostics Tool (SPDiag) version 2 contains several important updates and new features that increase its effectiveness as a troubleshooting tool. All SPDiag version 1 functionality has been retained, although some existing functions and features have been improved.

The following is a list of new features in SPDiag version 2:

  • The Diagnostics tab

You can use the Diagnostics tab to execute predefined rules, based on the System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) health model, against the target SharePoint farm. The Diagnostics feature was designed to discover and report against common SharePoint issues by checking all servers in the target SharePoint farm for compliance with best practices and acceptable operational limits, and to provide concise descriptions of problem sources and remedies.

For more information, see SPDiag Diagnostics tab.

  • Collecting and importing data using SPDiag from the command line

You can use the command line to collect data from all servers in a farm and then import the data into a new project on another computer running SPDiag. This is useful if you do not want to install the SharePoint Administration Toolkit on a server in the target farm; if you want to collect data to be analyzed on a remote computer or by a third party; or if you want to automatically capture log data as a triggered event.

For more information, see "Collecting and importing data using SPDiag from the command line" in Troubleshoot a SharePoint farm by using SPDiag.

  • Trend view zoom feature

You can use the mouse to zoom in on a specific time frame in the Performance Monitor graph. To zoom in, click and drag over the specific time frame. When you release the mouse button, the graph will update to show the time frame you selected, and the time range in the master filter bar will change to reflect the new range.

For more information, see "Selecting and collecting data in Trends view" in Troubleshoot a SharePoint farm by using SPDiag.
