Restoring individual files and folders

Published: August 12, 2009

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

To restore individual files and folders from a backup, Windows Home Server installs a driver onto the client computer to open a connection. The driver loads a read-only volume of the selected backup onto the client computer. The read-only volume is displayed in Windows Explorer, where you can drag-and-drop the files and folders that you want to restore onto the desktop of the client computer.

Note

To restore individual files and folders or to restore a client computer by using the Home Computer Restore CD, you need the Windows Home Server password.

To restore files and folders from a backup

  1. On your client computer, in the notification area, right-click the Windows Home Server icon.

  2. Click Windows Home Server console.

  3. Type the Windows Home Server password, and then click Next.

  4. Click Computers & Backup, click the client computer that you want to restore a file or folder for, and then click View Backups.

  5. On the Backups of <Computer Name> window, click the backup that you want to restore files or folders from.

  6. In Restore or View Files from, click Open.

The Opening Backup window appears while the backup opens. This may take a few minutes to complete.

Important

If you are prompted to restart your computer after the virtual volume driver is installed, ignore this message. You do not need to restart your computer.

  1. Browse to the file or folder that you want to restore.

  2. Either drag-and-drop or copy the file or folder to a folder on the client computer.
