You can view and manage backups from the Windows Home Server console.

To view and manage backups

  1. On your client computer, in the notification area, right-click the Windows Home Server icon.

  2. Click Windows Home Server console.

  3. Click the Computers & Backup tab, and then, on the View Backups window, double-click the client computer that you want to view or manage the backups for.

  4. On the View Backups window, in Backups of <Computer Name>, click the backup that you want to view or manage.

  5. On the same window, in Manage Backup from, click one of the following options:

    • Manage automatically

Windows Home Server manages the backup automatically. You can use Settings in the Windows Home Server console to change how the backup is managed.

    • Keep this backup

By default, backups are automatically deleted when they are replaced by a new backup. You can use this setting to retain the backup instead.

    • Delete at the next backup cleanup

The backup will be deleted during next backup cleanup. By default, this occurs on Sunday.

  6. Click Details to see more information about the selected backup.

  7. To restore an individual file, on either the Backup Details window or the View Backup window, click Open.

To manage backup settings

  1. On your client computer, in the notification area, right-click the Windows Home Server icon.

  2. Click Windows Home Server console.

  3. On the Windows Home Server console, click Settings.

  4. On the Windows Home Server Settings window, click Backup.

  5. In the details pane, make any of the following changes:

    • Choose the start and end time.

Tip

By default, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) on Windows SBS is scheduled to update client computers at 3:00 A.M. To avoid conflict, you should set your client computer backup time to start at a different time. For example, you could set your client computer updates to start at midnight, and your client computer backups to start at 3:00 A.M.

  - Automatic Backup Management

Choose how many monthly, weekly, and daily backups to keep.

  - Backup Cleanup and Database Repair

Each of these processes may take several hours.

If you click **Repair**, the Backup Database Repair Wizard opens and helps you verify and repair the integrity of the backup process. Backups that cannot be recovered may be permanently lost.

Every Sunday during the Backup Time, Backup Cleanup deletes old backups that you have manually marked for deletion and that are outside the Automatic Backup Management settings. You can choose **Cleanup Now** to free up more disk space.

  1. Click OK to save your settings.

Note

These backup settings apply to all of the client computers that are connected to and backed up by Windows Home Server.

Note

Client computers are backed up sequentially. A backup that is in progress finishes, even if it is past the end of the Backup Time.
